MPG 20 or not
Has anyone been getting 20MPG like advertised? I have a 2007 on order and was wondering if this really doe get 20 MPG on the highway. I have a 100 mile round trip commute to work, all highway. What have yall been getting?
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
about 16 highway and 13.5 city.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
20 mpg is only on a manual
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
You MIGHT get 20mph with a manual tranny, Highway ONLY or coasting downhill.
You will NEVER get it any other way. If you do a search of old posts about this there was a lot of discussion nad only one (1) BOZO claims to ger 20+ on a regular basic. RYD |
Re: MPG 20 or not
We managed to get between 21-23 on a highway trip, no mountains, at 60MPH. But there's no way you will get that as an overall average. And in 2007, there are .2 more litres of displacement, so that might lower the economy, or raise it. I have no clue.

Re: MPG 20 or not
i had also gotten over 21 with my auto but only on highway under 60 driving like a little old lady . :D
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
18mpg on the highway is doable with the auto. Anything this heavy in full time 4wd is not going to get great mileage. But if you check out other 4wd forums (Jeep) you're going to see that 18 mpg is not that bad.
Bottom line all vehicles are a compromise in one way or another. |
Re: MPG 20 or not
I got 20.07 on one tank of mostly light down hill coming across CO and northern AZ. Normally I get 16 or 17 on the highway and 14 or 15 in town. Those figures were with the stock 33's. Now that I have 35's my mileage has gone down about 4% after adjusting for the speedometer being off due to the larger tires.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
mostly light down hill as you can see 20 average is impossible...

Re: MPG 20 or not
Hello Webster,
I consistently do 20.3 mpg on the hwy. Now have 16K miles. Here are the parameters I have always posted: Automatic, 32" tires, 35# pressure(the door placard says 30# for 32" tires), Mobile 1 synthetic since 3000 miles, at speed limit, cruise control where possible, going 335 miles from Panama City, Fl to N Atlanta, Ga.(which is a flat run)and checked by actual fuel used upon arrival with no city driving!! So I cheerfully inform all H3 fans that GM has done a great job on posting accurate mpg figures!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: MPG 20 or not
19,000 miles on my H3 w/auto trannie and 18 is best mileage that I've seen. Usually get closer to 17mpg on the highway at 70-85mph.

Re: MPG 20 or not
During the break-in period -expect about 13 with mixed driving. At least that's what we are averaging.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
I have been averaging from mid 12s and 13s with mixed (mostly city) driving. My last tank was mid 14s at 4,750 miles and the usual driving. My MPG has slowly and steadily been going up as I near 5K miles.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
I'm just over 5k now, and everytime I've filled up since I bought it, it's been around 16mpg*. This is almost all city and I still drive like it's a race car! Just the other day I took a 250 mile trip, stayed right around 90mph for most of it, and it came up to around 17 mpg*.

Re: MPG 20 or not
Quite possibly, and it's not like downtown with stop lights set to turn red when you get near them on every block. There is a lot of cruising at moderate speeds but it's still considered city!

Re: MPG 20 or not
Yes, I'd say about 200 miles of the trip was in the high 80s, just touching 90. The rest was 60-80. I was still getting passed too, it's crazy in that area, with my last car 100mph was normal. I took it easy on the h3, but there was really no difference between going 60 and 90, all felt the same.

Re: MPG 20 or not
RYD - I was counting on you not believing, took you long enough BTW. You see, I was hoping to get you to come up here to help me move under the cover that you would be my MPG Monitor Patrol. So, now that it's out there, how 'bout it?

Re: MPG 20 or not
With the Toyo 33" tires, I have been averaging about 15 on the highway with an automatic. Mine just went over 7,000 this weekend.
I have given up on mpg for now, but love my tire look :D |
Re: MPG 20 or not
20 mpg, sure I'll never see it for as long as I own my H3...:)

Re: MPG 20 or not
You may get 20 mpg if you have the manual, and you don't go fast on the freeway. Car and Driver magazine reported that the H3 has a coefficient of drag of 0.51. That's awful. The FJ Cruiser is 0.40, and the LR3 is 0.41. A BMW X5 is only 0.35. What this means is the H3 is going to have a lot of aerodynamic drag at the higher speeds, and your fuel economy will plummet. Drive slowly, and get the transmission in 5th gear as soon as possible for best mileage.

Wish I could go slow on the highways. From where I live in Montana, I can go east for 3 1/2 hours and get to my Hummer dealer and not be near the eastern border of Montana. From where I live in Montana, I can go west for 3 hours 20 minutes to our cabin and not be near the western border of Montana. And this is doing 70 - 75 miles an hour, going slower would take forever here unfortunately :( |
Re: MPG 20 or not
17.5MPG, 80% highway, 20% city. 5 speed @ 75MPH average highway speed. 7K miles on the odometer.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
My experience confirms what everybody else is saying. I have just over 8k miles and average 14-15 mpg, although there have been tanks that I have made over 16 mpg. I assume that I would get better mileage if I had a longer commute to work, but I will take that mileage over a long daily commute!!!:D

Re: MPG 20 or not
Yeah, when you start going 75 and over it uses more gas. It's the big hole it leaves in the air.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
17, my canyon got 20 my Charger get about 20
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
Maybe I?m anal but I have tracked my fuel usage from the beginning. I now have 21k miles, live in Phoenix so the A/C is on all the time, four wheel frequently, drive 5 to 10 over the limit, have 35? tires and it?s an automatic..
Min 8.07 mpg (four wheeling in Colorado). Max 20.07 mpg (on the way back from Colorado) Average for 21k miles 15.06mpg. |
Re: MPG 20 or not
well it depends where you are from. America doesn't have the highest grade of gas. Yes people from Mexico may have terrible gas, Canadians have the top in North America. If you fill up with some Canadian gas, you'll probably get over 20mpg.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
I live in Utah, Use 85 octane, drive 30 miles one way to work on the highway. I consistantly get 19.6 MPG.
|
Re: MPG 20 or not
Last weekend we drove from the LA area to Sedona AZ and got 17.9 mpg averaging 65+ mph with the a/c on. That's for an automatic with 5000 mi., Adventure pkg, brush guard, roof bars and std tire pressure on a route with a lot of long grades.
Based on that I think I could get really close to 20mpg if I turned off the a/c, upped the tire pressure and drove with max economy in mind; maybe even more. |

Re: MPG 20 or not
21 mpg doing 45-55 mph.
16 mpg at 65 15 mpg at 75 12-14 around town, short trips during the week. This is with a loaded AT Luxury. Realize that ethanol has a lot less btu/gallon than gasoline, and a 10% blend will drop your mileage 1-2 mpg. Do not use E85 of course in a 2006. I don't know about the 2007s yet. |
Re: MPG 20 or not
I got 20.1 MPG highway today at 65 MPH. I got 19.1 MPG Highway doing about 70 MPH, and this is an automatic, not stick shift. Otherwise it is about 16 MPG city. But take note that I have about 6000 miles on the vehicle, so it is pretty well broken in by now.

Re: MPG 20 or not
i got about 13.5mpg in the city and 15 on the highway. this cant be good:crying:
