Traction control switch not working?
I was at the beach on sunday ,I thought I would shut off traction and fool around but it didnt do anything?.I beleve I hit the button sometime over the last 10 months and it worked?.
I did unplug it looked at pins(looked ok) and repluged it,still does not work. Any Ideas before I bring it to the dealer I dont have a chance to bring it there next week and Im going away to Georgia the following week so its a few weeks to get it there . Going to dealer = pain in the a s s |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
I think you have to hold it down for like 10 seconds before it turns off and shows the message in the message center

The manual said to push button and to disable stability control hold for 5 seconds ? I did hold it for 5 to 9 seconds . Ill try 10 seconds cant hurt. |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
Hold the button in for 5 seconds then look where your mileage is it will say system off.

I just did it and said stab sysem off and traction light was on. I thought you could disable traction then if you hold it for 5 seconds to disable stab system.thats what i figured from reading the manual ? I guess it disingages both at the same time . |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
i have tried and tried to turn mine off , no luck , im not sure we can turn it off , just the stability sys. and clear the warning when in 4 low .
BTMing pretty much overides it , i think  :p :D we need f5 to the rescue |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
I think traction control system and the Stabilitrac system are entirely different.
Stabilitrac you can turn off, when you put the truck into 4wheel low, Stabilitrac automatically turns off, but the traction control system is still on. |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
yes that is my expierience too and no way to disable tracton but when we BTM we hold the system back with the brakes ? not sure if this is correct but seems like the truck acts like that
|
Re: Traction control switch not working?
In one of the "Diff" threads, we discussed using BTM in different situations.
I soft dirt, sand etc, it is best to allow the traction controll to do its thing, by allowing the wheels to spin until traction is transferred to the wheels that have it. I situations where "sudden" traction can cause damage to moving parts, (front axels:-), using BTM and NOT allowing the wheels to spin, thereby not giving the traction control an opportunity to engage is best. Like that:D |

Re: Traction control switch not working?

Re: Traction control switch not working?
With the 5-speed you don't have stabil-trac right?
only traction control So HummBebe I should turn of the traction control (the vehicle with squigly lines) on rough rocky trails and let the front wheels spin?? I thought the idea was the brakes slowed the wheel that was spinning and transferred the power to the one not spining? Do you think the traction control casued the shock loads that breaks the ring gear or the shock from spinning wheels sudennly grabbing solid ground?? Still think the diff housing flexes?? I'll be carefull with my lead foot for awhile Why didn't GM give us a real front locker with an on and off switch with the Adventure Package? |

I hope this helps.:D |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
Now I am confused because I can push the button on the dash and turn it (trac control) off? I have a 5-speed.
So turning it off dissables the ABS controll traction control on all wheels correct? I haven't tried it in low range locked up yet. I guess the weak link is the Al diff housing with all the torque from the 4:1 t-case. |

Re: Traction control switch not working?
So the question is can you disable traction control and stability control seperatly.  :D

You can turn off Stabilitrac. You cannot turn off the ETC...Electronic Traction Control. |

Lets clear some things up, first off the traction control system can be turned off when you are locked or unlocked in 4hi or 4lo.All you do is hit the button with the vehicle and the squiggly lines and the message center will show trac off. If this doesn't happen and it shows service 4wd system you then need to take it in. The beauty thing about the system is that when you are in sand or mud it can be switched off so the computer doesn't bring you to a hault and kill the forward momentum. While in 4hi-lock or 4lo the system automatically shuts off and only activates to enhance traction in a situation when one wheel is spinning and the other is not, basically an electronic locker. Hopefully this a little clearer, now go out there and find out the beauty of 4lo and a 5-speed!!!

Re: Traction control switch not working?
thats the stabilitrac symbol , we cant turn off the traction with an automatic just BTM to overide system , or we havent figured it out yet ;)

Re: Traction control switch not working?
Thanks JKS H3
I am glad I have the 5-speed. |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
i dont mind a little BTMing , its better than having to use a clutch all the time :p ;) :D :D
|
Re: Traction control switch not working?
Real men don't worry about the clutch!:p :D

Bebe's got it right, you cannot turn off ETC with an auto trans. Carved out a good mudpit on my property too see how deep she'd go...when I finally got her stuck on the frame, 4lo locked rear diff, Stab control off, those brakes were working really hard to stop my spinning tires...or I might have got out of it! A little dissapointed in that feature. |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
What's with the FJ in the background????

 I dont get it The manual says (page 4-9) you can turn traction control off by hitting button once(It doest work and they dont say with 5 speed only?) Under stability control it says hold button for 5 seconds (that works) Im confused Dont you want to disable traction if stuck so you could rock it? |

guess we just have to BTM with the autos  |

Re: Traction control switch not working?
You guys are killin'me....:p
Stabilitrac: A system which stabilizes the traction of the vehicle. It was designed to help prevent rollovers and driver error in emergency manuvers. ABS: Automatic Braking System...self explanatory ETC or Electronic Traction Control: A system which recognizes a wheel with out traction thereby transferring the power to the wheel that is not spinning allowing the new "powered" wheel to move. In deep sand if you spin the tires the only direction you will go is down. If you can back up/out then do so. Same approach applies to deep mud, the only direction you will be going in deeper in the mud. Only momentum is your friend. However, in soil, (dirt without rocks) as long as you allow the free wheel or wheels to spin the ETC will transfer power to those wheels the are not spinning. In cases where the sudden traction or contact of a spinning wheel would cause damage, BTM prevents the spinning wheel from freely spinning. This way when it does finally make contact, you won't explode something in your driveline. So to Recap: Rock Crawling, Slickrock or other such hard surfaces = BTM (Brake Throttle Modulation) Loose soil, Dirt, Shallow Sand = Electronic Traction Control Deep Sand, Deep Mud = Momentum Snow, Ice, Rain soaked Streets = Stabilitrac You cannot turn off the ETC, or ABS. You can turn off Stabilitrac. If you have a Manual transmission, you do NOT have Stabilitrac. If you have the button, the car with squiggly lines underneath it, most likely, it is non operational. Only the Automatic Transmissions come with Stabilitrac. Like that:D |

I agree that only the auto's have Stabilitrac. However, I think those of us with manual's can confirm that the "car button with squiggly lines underneath it" is indeed operational. When pressed and held it turns off traction control (confirmed by a DIC message). |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
I have a 5 speed and when I push the button a red light comes on and also it says trac control disabled.
When the system is working off road the goes on and off and you can here some buzzing. The traction control works by using the brakes to slow the spinning wheel acting similar to a limited slip. The big question is should I have traction control on or off when rock crawling? What would be better to avoid diff breakage I wish the front end had a real locker that I could control!! |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
Quote:
What precisely is the DIC message?? According to Rod Hall, who himself owns a Manual, the ETC cannot be turned off. It is on all the time. BTM is the only way to disable it. For Dan's Q; If you are rock crawling, BTM will override the system. It is very important to NOT spin your wheels. Although, it may seem like you would need three feet! |
Re: Traction control switch not working?
dan has 3 feet ;) :D :D LOL

Re: Traction control switch not working?
Something I just thought about...
How can the same button mean one thing in one truck and something else in another??? Doesn't make sense, but then again, I'm not an engineer.;) |
