Would you support a flag burning ban?
|
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
Hard to say...on one hand you have "Freedom of speech"...on the other you have an act that could/should be considered treason. I would kind of support it...but not enough to actually vote. :D

Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
Ban it - DO NOW!!!!
And if it turns out the burners are illegals- crack their skulls for them. |

I can find something more important to worry about.

Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
The flag is sacred to all that live here.
Ban it. CNN = poop |
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
Freedom of Speech= Verbaly expessing an idea or ideal.
Now unless they are burning the flag while it is shoved in their mouth. I think it should be banned. If burning our flag is covered under Freedom of Speech, then I feel that my running their happy a$$ over with my truck like the low life speed bump they are should also be covered under Freedom of Speech. |
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
While I beleive that the right to burn the flag is one of the great things about this country and shows how free we truely are....I also agree with the following quote - :D

Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
I salute my parents and others in the armed forces, and I hate the idea of flag burning as a protest, but I still couldn't support a ban.
But if someone burns a flag as part of a crime, threat or harassment ... like protesting at funerals, weddings, military homecomings, on private property, etc, then string them up. Burning flags discredits their protest anyway. They aren't any kind of group I want to join. Besides, what if I want to respectfully retire my flag? I used to be able to burn it respectfully ... am I supposed to throw it in the trash now? |

Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
As long as they are putting the time into this, they might as well have made it illegal.
Besides being disrespectful, isn't just the act of burning **** w/o a permit illegal? If I went to the courthouse and started burning some old clothes/garbage on the steps they'd take me to jail, but if it was a flag - I'd be okay because of freedom of speech? |
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
Never thought of it that way Dei...good point. :)

Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
It's legal and respectful to dispose of the American Flag buy burning in a solemn ceremony. Many VFW's have ceremonies during the year to dispose of old, tatered flags.

how can it not fit into one of these catagories??? find a reason that does not fit into one of these and list it...when you are tired of the futile search then agree with the BAN! |
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
You guys are too emotional. The right to burn a flag or anything else should not be restricted by a goverment. It really doesn't matter how you 'feel' about it, it's a matter of rights.

I already listed one - "what if I want to respectfully retire my flag? I used to be able to burn it respectfully ... am I supposed to throw it in the trash now?" Lots of things are legal in one situation but not in another. You can yell 'fire' and pull the alarm lever in a crowded theater ... if there's actually a fire. But you'll get arrested if there isn't one (or if you set it). Freedom of speech doesn't give people the right to harass others or commit crimes. It allows them to criticize the government without going to jail. Burning a flag at a funeral or in front of a veteran's house disturbs the peace and directly harasses someone. Filing a permit to hold a public rally and burn a flag peacefully as government protest is something different. If flag-burning became illegal, could someone burn full-color posters of the flag instead? How about flag colored clothing, underwear, bandanas, shop rags, paint designs, stickers or cars painted with a flag. Where would the ban stop? Personally, I DO NOT agree with flag-burning ... I only support the right to peaceful protest . |
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
One more thought ... flag-burning is inarticulate and pointless, like screaming and swearing instead of talking things out. Peaceful public communication is a fundamental right. Don't burn your flag on my lawn, but file a permit and do it peacefully downtown if that's the best you can do.
Besides, if you're going to lock people up for being inarticulate, inflammatory or offensive, I can think of a few people who wouldn't have a chance. ;) |

there's nothing pointless to something that divides people or that enrages others. Burn my flag and it pisses me off because it's a lack of respect. Ignorance is offensive AND you can be locked up for it. Better look out! |
Re: Would you support a flag burning ban?
People don't read before posting.
You would still be able to respectfully burn your flag in a solemn ceremony when your flag is unfit for service, or you can take it to your local VFW and they will do it. Be sure to leave them a donation. |

Would you support a flag burning ban? My POV...yes for the above mentioned application. For any other protest BS...expect an @ss kicking contest to break out in our "redneck of the woods" :D ;) |

I saw your earlier post and appreciate the info. But I figured a blanket constitutional ban on flag burning could call a flag-burning ceremony into question, which would be a shame. |
