Battery died....

Factory battery started acting up a week ago and then left me high and dry in my garage this weekend. I am assumed that it would not be covered under warranty.....so I replaced it with a Optima yellow top.:D Question is, what is the purpose of the stock battery cover? Is it an insulator for in the cold, to keep the dirt off, and or just for looks?

Re: Battery died....

The cover is there mainly to act as an additional heat shield to the battery. There is a tremendous build up of heat in the engine area in hot climates. I replaced my factory battery last year, and I just replaced it again (under warranty) this past weekend.

You guys in hot areas have a lot of problems with batteries, not just Delco, either. Heat is a killer.:D

Fstop, it just gets hot here durring the summer!:p

Well I crammed the cover back on, guess I will cut out 2 new side holes this weekend for a better fit.

Many of us had early battery issues with plate/post failures....they were covered under warranty.

Many of us did not have them covered under warranty as it was after the one-year limit for consumable coverage. Mine gave it up at 2 years after a few mysterious full-discharges that I think are related to the AC system staying active long after it should shutdown and draining the battery. Unable to reproduce and chase it down though. So I carry a jumper and have installed the yellow top just to have a battery that can rebound some from full discharges better than a typical starter.

I've had my rig since the end of June 06 and my battery has dies on me twice.

my rig has a slight pause when I crank it up. Does that sound like I'm going to need one soon? I looked at the battery and it was showing a dim green light on it. IS it starting to go bye- bye??

when you start your hummer, and the clock is reset, it means your battery is about to crap out

My battery did this just before it died on me, went off roading the day before the battery was fine, the next day battery had a slight pause to it , did a few start up's and then it was dead in my drive way. not much warning to it.

this is the third battery for the truck, this time I went with the Sears Interstate Battery ( Heavy Duty) . Battery was like $ 130.00

The dealership wanted $ 300.00 for a new battery from them, I thinking holy crap, what is it, made out of gold!

Still alive. I cranked it with a slight pause, and started. Hummmmmm. do I just buy a new battery and take the hit? This would be the first battery I'm going to have to get. I've got 66K on the truck. And, no...my clock is fine when it's started.

Go to Costco and buy a yellow top Optima. They don't list them on their website. But, to the best of my recollection, they were something like $100-130.

Re: Battery died....

Right before my battery went all the way dead, my CD Player would run through all of the CD when trying to start the truck up.

Re: Battery died....

Yes...the battery dying does do some funny things. My CD player would change over to radio in the middle of a song, some of the last key used presets would go haywire, clock would reset.....and sometimes even the toilet in the house would flush when I started the beast....go figure?!?!

Sorry if you're out of warranty...at least you can buy a trustworthy replacement....I now still have a factory one which I will always mistrust.

:-)

yeup, well, the battery just gave out this morning. I have a G5 hooked up to it and when it gets no power, the siren goes off..

well, my alarm has been going off for about 20minutes down until i got someone to get me some cables..

i wont deal with this crap, the yellow top is for extra draw systems like a aftermarket sound system and the reds are for quick, reliable starts everytime. i have a red in my camaro and i will also swear that i picked up another 10rwhp with the swap!!!!!!

Re: Battery died....

My battery died on me last week and left me stranded in a parking garage downtown. I called 1-866 Hummer 6 for roadside and my battery was replaced under warranty. Do I need to have the dealership run more diagnostic test to determine why the battery died in the first place or just accept the fact the batteries are a POS and move on.

Re: Battery died....

In that case you should try changing the air filter also. By one from K&N and you can expect at least another 40 or 50 rwhp!

Go with a red top.

Re: Battery died....

well, roadside service came by and they replaced the battery. It held a bit of volts, 8 or so, but the battey was not hold at all...

so we replaced it and it cranked up fine... we'll see where we at in the future with this battery stuff.

Origanally, i traded my 05 cts-v and that had cronic battery problems... oh well, this one should hold be i will monitor it...

laterZ!

Re: Battery died....

Hey,
What are the difference between Red and Yellow Top....

f5fstop 09-04-2006 06:07 PM

Re: Battery died....

Deep cycle (yellow top) is designed to be discharged repeatedly with no damage to the battery. They will be heavier due to the increased size of the lead used in the plates.
A deep cycle battery is designed for vehicles with a lot of accessories that will cause drain such as winches, large stereos, tons of off-road lighting, etc. Deep cycle batteries the same size as a regular battery do not have as high of CCA. Therefore, it is suggested to go to a larger deep cycle battery.

The yellow top Optima D75/25 has 650 CCA, while the 75/25 red top has 720 CCA. If you are in a cold climate, the CCA can be important. In addition, cranking amps at 32 degrees F is 100 amps more for the red top versus the yellow top.

Re: Battery died....

Battery went completely dead again while camping.... probably time to purchase a yellowtop....
