Front Differential AND Driveline
OK!!! It's my turn :p
Went for a test drive with the Shop foreman this morning. I did not really get to talk to him later today, however, Miss LittleHotThang (love her) in Service told me they ordered an entire new Front Diff and Driveline. I'm sure the driveline has to do with what was happening a month ago.The front diff carrier mount bushings were worn to the point that when I put the truck in drive there was a very loud clank. When he tested it on the rack, he could see the driveline forcing the diff up. So front diff being forced up by the driveline = new Front diff and driveline. And yes the ring gear was toast! yay Mee!!!!:jump: |

I wonder if the carrier mount bushing failure is a precursor to the diff failure as my bushing is shot and due to be replaced this week but I've had no diff problems yet. I can't tell by looking at it that it's bad but my service mgr. said he could see the rubber separating with it on a lift and the tech in the cab power braking it. F5 what do you think? If the diff was torqueing an inordinate amount because the mount was shot could that cause a ring gear/pinion failure...   |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
My front Diff is leaking. Also the BAND button on my navigation is wearing. The N is part of the D. Do you think they will cover that on the warranty. Im tired of brining this truck in every month.

Trying to remember, but didn't mine look like yours? |

I have been wondering that myself. It all depends on whether or not the pinion angle is changed under torque. and if the degraded bushing causes it. Curious. Could be a Chicken and egg question. |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
I talked to the tech about it this morning. His diagnosis was that the pinion gear was jammed into the ring gear causing the damage (at least on mine).
Take a look at the pic I posted on the other thread. |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
I saw it... I think he should check the carrier bushings....just for good measure.
Neo has had his replaced. |

Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
who broke the rear axle shaft?
Looks like it got magnetized:) Was that on an H3? |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
To strengthen the LS1 f-body rear ends when going to 4.11's many of us used the ratech solid pinion to replace the crush collar and a diff cover with bearing supports. The problem we saw was that after a few hard launches the crush collar would compress creating slop in the pinion and eventual failure.
The H3's 4.56 ratio pinions are pretty small and there is a large lateral force created especially when in the adv low range. Couple this with some slip-and-grips and the loads get pretty high. Not sure if the ratech solid spacer and diff cover would help with the H3. |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
i took that out back in april , i had to out do the beebster :giggling: the 7 hour tow off the mountain ate the end up like a pencil sharpener and magnitized it , kinda looked like a porcupine :p . i kept trying to get up the stairs after the front ring gear went :OWNED: ;)

Is there an 8" or 8.25 front carrier that would work on the H3? Even is slight modifications are necessary, that would still be better than the 7.25? |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
Dana 60's front and rear?
I wish |
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
HAHAHAHAHA
Does Dana make a Cast Iron IFS carrier??? |

Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
ouch that not good pinion looks awful :twak: and it drove home fine after Colorado ???????????
|
Re: Front Differential AND Driveline
It drove home fine, but when I got back I took it in a few days later cause it was making a loud clank when I put it into drive. That's when they changed the Carrier mount/bracket bushings. (Drivline forcing differential up is bad:-)
Then I picked it up and on the way to Deer Valley, I noticed when I got off the gas I would hear a "jingle bells" type sound. Sorta. It got worse and louder over the last couple of weeks, so I took it in and this is what they found. Caput! This time they just changed the entire case and driveline. I begged them to make sure I received a new "hardend gear" if possible. They are also considering (99%) to extend the warranty on the front end (diff) to 100K. I'll know the final outcome of that on Friday. Once again, HUMMER of Sacramento ROCKS! |
