Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

Kind of pricey* I wonder what Amstar's rear box and drawers will cost.

The drawer idea is pretty good.

When the back seat is folded down is it pretty flat?

*Again they think all Hummer owners are either very rich or stupid or both.

I have thought of making a shelf in the back w/o drawers where tool boxes and stuff could go under and ice chest and camping gear on top. You could anchor teh shelf or box to the tie downs.

I made my rear sleeping prototype platform with 1"x12" pine and spent $30 bucks on some carpet and padding.

I took a few pics on an old "film" camera. I'll get it developed and burn CD.

PM me and I'll email you pics next week.

The platform works pretty good.

I can think of better things to spend almost 1k on. You could make one yourself of better quality for under 100 bucks. I believe that company uses carpet covered particle board, not even solid wood or metal.

If you made one yourself couldnt you make it to the height of the back seats folded and have a relatively flat floor.

You could do whatever you wanted...basically your only limited by available local stock hardware. Then again, you could probably find anything you wanted on the www:excited:

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

That price is beyond being a RIP OFF...

In any major METRO area find a cabinet maker and you can have it done at 1/3 the price, or less, maybe a little more if you want drawers, etc etc (wood , plywood, formica over plywood, or...)

Heck 3/8 or 1/2 AC plywood, a saw, a drill, good glue... Flip up hinge the back piece, lay in 2 or 3 plywood drawers (the seperaters would give support to the top {supporting the middle}),

An EASY weekend project.

Used a steel storage shelve jacked from moms garage. Think is was 2'x4' shelve grey steel :beerchug: Fit perfect with 4 spacers and some stainless self tapping screws to the sides. Sitting atop two plastic storage bins about 5" high. Modular and no wasted space when in...:clapping:
Similar effect, far more cost effective.:fdance:

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

I've been wanting to get something like that for mine too but thats way to pricey. With the way the seats DON'T lay flat, I can only get one dog cage in there. If I had something like that I could get 2 of my bomb dogs in my H3. I hate the fact that my wife can carry more in her Exploder than I can in my 3.

fourfourto 10-27-2006 11:45 PM

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

That works super low cost.:clapping:

I like the covered wood idea the best with 2 or 3 draws, maybe a flap on the inside behind rear seat to extend it some when seats are folded so a air bed could be used or if you need a long flat floor.

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

Well, I have plans drawn up and will probably build a storage drawer system for rear this Friday. It will be 8" tall, 41" wide, and 28" deep. This will allow for rear door to close and sloped back of rear seats. It will have two sep. drawers on ball bearing glides, each drawer will have a rubber liner mat, it wiil be bolted down to tie downs, and tie downs will be move to top of unit with large heavy duty rubber mat from Tractor Supply. Will post pics when done.

Wish me luck!

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

Did anyone ever produce a reasonably priced model?

For my fellow weekend warriors, did the rear door interfere with the driver's side drawer in your cabinets? When I open my door, the interior portion looks like it might interfere with a drawer being pulled out completely on that side.

Otherwise, I think I can build one for around $150. Does anyone know of a good plastic materials supplier? I was going to try to build mine of lightweight yet strong plastics to save on weight and mileage.

Ok all, here is my answer to the cargo organization issue.

It weighs around 15 - 20 pounds empty. Manual R&D and construction time was right around 3 hours. I skipped the drawer idea as this configuration allows much more space in the lower quadrant to be utilized.

Total cost of materials - $85.00.

As far as durability, today I had a packaged 50" plasma television partially sitting on the lower portion of the system and the rest on the folded seats. The cargo system never even groaned.

Enjoy! :beerchug:

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

Its a shelf, doesn't have a lockable drawer...

Don't think its what everyone was talking about... if it works for you GREAT but we are looking for a box the size of the cargo area, 4 to 8" tall with a drawer or drawers, possibly lockable...

I think I just wet myself regarding the hooker crack :dancingbanana:

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAA (Very nice dig!)

Just a note on the rack - the top layer and legs pop out and the bottom layer is at the height of the panel bevel, just below the power outlet.

To each there own I guess.

Here is a more economical option I think I might try. $269.99

http://trucktoys4less.com/cargocaddy.html

Mid-Size

Exterior
Width Depth Height
37.75" 32.25" 10"

Interior Drawer
Width Depth Height
33.75" 30" 7"

All Models will hold a maximum weight of 150 lbs (EVENLY DISTRIBUTED) on top of Cargo Caddy

Material used is Low Density Polyethylene ~ Same as stadium seats or playground equipment

Give us a rapid field report...

Re: STORAGE BOX FOR H3

The mid size would fit in the cargo area its Apx 42 X 33.
That would leave Apx 2 9/16 inch gap to each side(at the bottom) and 3/4inch at the hatch.
I think the rear seats folded are are less then 10 inches high ,but its close.(might be enough to even out a twin or full air mattress)

If you get one give a write up:D
