upgrading battery

I want to buy the best battery out there! One that can handle alot of drain when in use.
I would like to know what the rest of you all have and why?

Thanks

I have lots of toys installed.

And I see that ppl are having probs with thier 3's being dead. I would like to have the peace of mind that I won't have the problem while out in the middle of nowhere.

Re: upgrading battery

I also saw the yellow top for $149.00 at a local store.
I had a battery replacement last march and its been fine since.
Im not running the dvd for more than 20 mins without it running, also the bad battery might have been due to running the dvd a hour a day with the fridge running also,I only have the fridge running now when truck is started.(dealer checked and said bad cell)
Im going to get a yellow top when battery needs replaced or I get a winch .
I measured the battery a few weeks ago when I put my underhood light in,the measurements are:
9 inches long
6 3/4 inches wide
7 inches high
From what I read the base of the tray and the battery post holes would have to be modified for a optimum to fit in stock box.
At the store it seems only 1 yellow top and 1 red top will fit H3 specs.

Re: upgrading battery

Well crap 442, now you have gone and thrown me for a loop... I sure hope to heck that whatever I buy fits, I hate making mods.
Thanks for the measurments, that helps. Did you by chance get the part # for which one fits??

Re: upgrading battery

I haven't modified the battery cover...yet. It looks like a new cover was only about $10 should you goof up cutting. In the pictures, I have since removed the single plastic fastener holding the battery breather tube.

A bit more info on my Red Top:

I didnt get the part # but they have a chart that list the size.I remember only one red or one yellow in corect size so it should be easy to get the right one:D
I also saw them at sears and they have the chart on the display stand.

I also noticed the red top has a longer warranty, and the yellow top works also like a marine battery for heavy loads.

Post pics of install it should be a snap.:beerchug:

Also the nut on the battery terminal is only loosened slightly ,dont back it off compleatly.

Re: upgrading battery

Thanks 442.

Re: upgrading battery

My battery died again and I pulled it. There is no way I am going to replace it with something as small as what was in there...

Searched this thread up. Anyone recall how Paragon got 2 in his rig?

Did he stack one on top of his fuse bay?

H3slate 04-01-2008 09:50 PM

Re: upgrading battery

Paragon had an H2. Now that the aussies have 3's to play with, they are trying to fit two batteries in there too.

Re: upgrading battery

So now my question would be do you go with the red top or the yellow top if you are running off road lights and a winch in the future.

Vettster 04-02-2008 04:26 PM

Re: upgrading battery

I went with the red top.
Why?
My H2 doesn't have a big stereo and I don't ever plan on running my lights or winch without the engine running.

Re: upgrading battery

I'd like a new battery too. Optima battery, but which one is better yellow or red and are you saying they dont fit in the hummer's cooling box without modifying it first?

wpage 07-22-2008 12:44 AM

Re: upgrading battery

Best thing to do is discard that box and get a good rv deep cycle that fits the tray under the plastic box and go with that...

jersey 07-23-2008 03:44 PM

Re: upgrading battery

I did some battery research.

As I understand it:

The Optima batteries are virtually indestructable, super-powered, long-lasting fast-charging, cutting edge spiral cell technology automotive batteries. The closest competitor using the same technology(spiral/leakproof/antivibration/etc) is Exide Tech's Select Orbital battery.

Exide batteries

The Exide battery is a Select Orbital and has 690CCA, 850CA and for the H3 the model# is ORB75DT-84. The dimensions are L 9-1/16" W 6-7/8" H 8-13/16
Lowest online price found was $114.95+shipping $20.00+ depending where you live @ remybattery.com
Optima Batteries

The Red Top battery is an SLI (starting, lights and ignition) battery to be used solely for starting applications.

The redtop that comes closest to fitting the H3 is Model 25 Size Category: Med-Small L9.25 x W6.3 x H7.7" Height includes 1" terminals It features 720CCA and 910CA Lowest online price found was $149.95 w/free shipping @1st-optima-batteries.com

The Yellow Top battery is a deep cycle battery for traction applications, such as winches, wheelchairs and similar electrical vehicles or for heavy duty starting of engines with a higher drain on the battery.

The yellowtop that comes closest to fitting the H3 is Model D75/25 Size Category: Med-Small L9.25 x W6.7 x H7.8" Height includes 1" terminals It features 650CCA and 810CA Lowest online price found was $172.95 w/free shipping @1st-optima-batteries.com

The Blue Top battery is a combination starter and deep cycle battery specially adapted for the marine environment.

So Red is Basic everyday daily driver use

Yellow is for offroaders/customzers with winches, lightbars, mega-amped sound systems that wanna run things with the engine off

Blue is if youre converting your H3 into a sealed submersible vehicle and are planning to storm the shores of some distant foreign land.

In the end...

The Exide battery with slightly lower amps may be the better bet as far as Price, Fit & Finish go

The Optima's if you want the added power, but be prepared to retro-fit your cooling box to make it work/look good.

Re: upgrading battery

What is the warrenty on the original battery? (can't find my book)

This morning wouldn't start, got a jump and all ok...went to breakfast and after, it started but with a little ump...!!!

ABS light came on, Traction Control light came on, A/C stopped working....got home Ok, just a little warm with no A/C, called ONSTAR, the sweet young thing had to pass me off to a TECH who said:

it could be the battery
it could be a short in a wiring harness
it could be the alt
it could be a computer problem
it could be a combination of problems
it could be a could be...

If I knew for sure the battery is not covered I would pull it and just get a ride to AUTOZONE or PEPBOYS or NAPA or SEARS or SUPER WALMART or somewhere, have it checked and

WAM BAM THANK YOU MAMe !!!

Any ideas, I have around 35000 miles, very very little off road, no winch, no moon roof, no frig ...etc

only have my OOOGAH HORN and the trailer package (but no trailer)

Re: upgrading battery

RYD,
Your best bet is to go to Costco and get a RV battery to replace what you have. Even if your battery was coverd after prorate and dealer BS you will be better of changing it out...

You will need to get rid of that plastic housing so a decent battery will fit in the tray. Since I did mine no problems.:grouphug:

Thanks...

I read a lot in the SEARCH but can't find the warrenty period...

Also it could be a lot of different things according to their tech...can't remember my battery going bad in other cars in that short a time, 35000 miles, little over 2 1/2 years...

its not so much the money but the inconvience...read about the optima batteries, YELLOW, RED & BLUE---with my rheumatoid arthritics modifing the area the battery sits in is difficult...

Do you have any other suggestions or does anyone else?

Re: upgrading battery

Just went outside to see if she starts and was going to empty her so I can take into the shop tuesday morning

and

of course it started raining again, been raining lots today because of Hurricane Gustav...

anyway

it started but not happily, the A/C not working good and the phone has a background whistle...

but

the ABS light and the traction light did not stay on...while talking on the car phone all of a sudden the A/C starts working normal, checked the windshield wipers and now they work at normal speed, the noise disappeared from the phone, i turned it off and restarted several times and it was as if all was normal...

I DON'T TRUST THE BASTARD......!!!!!!!!

as soon as it stops raining I'll empty it from all my junk...the weather has cooled maybe 8 degrees and i'm thinking I might have a short somewhere, when the temp is hot it expands and maybe there is an open circuit and as it cools things return to normal...

someone suggested I take the battery connects off, clean the posts and reinstall so i'm going to try that also...

comments !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WELL, ITS BACK...

Just picked her up

AND

after all the speculation...

it was JUST THE BATTERY !

SO

They gave me a FREE NEW Battery (even after 35000 miles)

Re: upgrading battery

I think they gave you a new one just to get rid of it. The one they gave me only lasted 2 or 3 weeks.
