1994 HMCS Project
This is the thread where I will document what I've been doing on my truck. I didn't feel like making a web page, and I don't want to do this on HML because then no one here can view it. So enjoy all of the updation I'm about to release.

Re: 1994 H1 Project
Today's project was to remove some of the seats and apply my leather seat covers. I have had them almost a year and I have been anxious to install them. However, I have waited until now because they seemed complicated according to the directions.... Well, they were! :D
So far two are on, and it's taken 3 hours, 2 bandages, and my fingers hurt. Old seat, YUCK!: ![]() Duct Tape keeps the bottom on: ![]() Seat back: ![]() New seat, YAY!: ![]() ![]() |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Thats definately a big improvement. You doing all 4 seats?? That should be good for about a box of bandages ;)
|
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
lookin good. forget the bandages, if it's a cut use superglue. press the cut together and then put a drop of superglue on.
have fun with your project and keep the pictures comin |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
I have given up on that self-mutilation fest for now. :D I have 2/4 seats done.
I was just out removing interior panels to see where I can put sound insulation. I found a leak somewhere is bringing water down into the cab. I also removed the rear door panel on the passengers side, and I'm trying to determine why the door lock isn't working automatically. |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Sounds like its gonna be a good, long project car. The seats look good, and I hope that your fingers heal! lol

I was just out removing interior panels to see where I can put sound insulation. You can fit the insulation pretty much everywhere. I would recomend spraying the floors, rather then lay mat. I found a leak somewhere is bringing water down into the cab. Probably the roof seams. I also removed the rear door panel on the passengers side, and I'm trying to determine why the door lock isn't working automatically. If its an electric lock the cable usually is what is getting hung up. Sometimes the acuator fails, and then once and a great while a relay will go. |

Good luck and keep us posted ! Great ride !!!:beerchug:

Carey, what do you recommend? I haven't found anything yet. I'm going to look around at some of the A/V stores today that do car audio and see what they use. I found some rubber mats too that are about 1/2" thick for use in the floor and the ceiling. |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
You might also want to check the front window seals, mine are so bad it blows bubbles when driving in the rain. not too much of a broblem unless i've recently washed it. then the bibbles get realy big:D

Haha, that's crazy. I think my seals are pretty good, but I've got some sticky windows which I'm still trying to evaluate. But when the windows go up the sound goes down... somewhat... :D |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
I used Dynamat Xtreme, nice stuff but it is REALLY expensive. I think I spent 150.00 on just 14 sq ft, which is about enough for two layers on the doghouse! I would look on ebay, you should be able to find 100+ sq/ft for around 100-150. HUMMERDOGG, knows of a product that I would like to use next, I cant remember what its called, but I know if you do a search on the HML you will find the name.

Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Use some dielectric grease on the inside of the window tracks (where the window slides up in the seals) to fix this. I believe HUMMER updated the design to fix this problem in later years.

Re: 1994 HMCS Project
In response to the sound insulation:
I found Hushmat for $5/SQ Foot. I cancelled the order however as I found pipe insulation, which is a foam mat of sorts, from a local HVAC company for $1.66/SQ Foot. It's a little bit on the thick side (about 1/2") but it looks like acoustic insulation, and it should be great for stuffing into the b-pillars and roof. It actually is made into cylinders later on, but I managed to get some from before it goes into that process. |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Forgot to add this picture with the seats. I thought the address was amusing:

Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Alright, I took off the crash pad today and some other trim. Here is the heater/AC/blower unit that has to be removed, and replaced or repaired:
![]() This is just a view looking inside from the passengers door. I hope I can remember where the three long screws and one short one came from that bolt on the trim!: ![]() My acoustical mat is visible there in the middle. Also, I am in the process of selecting a new audio system. I have been looking at a Memphis audio set up for about $1000 including 4 speakers, 2 amps, and a sub. I will also be looking at a new headunit. |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Nice Aubs. keep em coming.:beerchug:

Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Foam insulation seems to be going in well. It might make squeaks when driving, but this has YTD. It is easy to cut, very flexible, and expands when you let it go so it fills up the space, and holds itself in. Seems like it will dampen the sound significantly if I can put enough in.
Time to go looking for A/V equipment! |

So this one doesnt have the upgraded heater unit right??? I dont know much about H1's but was wondering can these be fixed and if not whats the cost of an upgraded unit? |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Your doing all this work on it, and i cant even figure out how to put on my rear lamp brush guards, then again handy work defintly does not run in the family.
|
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
after all this work you could probably sell it for more than you bought it. Also which engine does it cuase didnt they offer two different engine options.
|
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
NHG,
This is the original heater, correct. You can buy the new one from AM General for something like $4,000. Or you can get a 1992/1993 unit for about $400-$700. Or, like I want to do, carefully take it out, disassemble it, and replace the components, and then reinstall it. I think I want to build a whole new unit actually and put it in. 3Hummer, This is the 6.5L engine, the larger of the two available. The truck has most other options also, such as CTIS, Upgraded sound (which still sucks), 2-piece rims, etc. |

Well will most likely be a lot less expensive than 4g's. That should be one hell of a project. At least summer is approaching (I think) so heater wont be needed much:beerchug: |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
I have begun to install the acoustic dampening material. The foam-like pipe insulation has gone in very easily so far, and fills the spaces in the doors/pillars nicely.
Here is the foam in the passengers side, up around the roof. Looks sort of like what was in there! ![]() This is in the b-pillar: ![]() For the smaller areas, instead of HUSHMat or something else thin and expensive, I opted for: ![]() I will be amazed if it works, but if I think the foam works, I can't see why this wouldn't. I found it at walmart, and it's about $0.50/SQ Foot! But if anyone ever tears this truck apart, they're going to be in for a colorful surprise! :jump: |

Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Why the restoration? Was it in bad shape when you found it?
|
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
So far, with just one door completed, and some of the B and A pillars stuffed with the insulating foam, it appears that the interior has indeed quieted down some. I have no way to measure this unfortunately.

No, it was just too loud on the highway, and I wanted to bring the haze out of the paint. It is 13 years old, and the paint has faded like most cars from that time. I figured it would be fun, and a good experience. It's really not been very difficult so far, and it's been rather inexpensive. So far: 3x foam mats= $60 2x Small foams= $12 Paint cleaners= $15 Tape, plastic linings= $15 As for other items: Drivers side windshield with gasket= $100 New CV boot= $15 New spline seal= $15 |

I have about half the paint refinished. This is the passengers side, which was been done.
![]() ![]() Hood with the left refinished with Meguire's 3-step and Meguire's Gold Class, a patch on the right with just the Meguire's Gold Class, and the rest on the right as it was when I got it: ![]() |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
Cool project. Its amazing what some of those paint products can do. I use the meguires clay bar on my vette and it literally looks like it was just repainted after you get done. No swirls at any angle. It takes like 3.5 hrs on a vette though.

Thanks! What a lot of work though! I can see why if you had a professional shop do this it would probably cost a fortune. But the difference is astounding. Makes you think twice about how old this truck really is, even though it is hard to tell in these photos. |
Re: 1994 HMCS Project
I detailed my HMCO once. Key word being once. It took close to ten hours, after that I decided that it is well worth the 150.00 to have a local place deal with it. Plus the results are far better then anything I every achieved.

Yeah but for 150 bucks the local shop wont do everything Aubs is doing. Example...my neighbor just had his twin turbo supra done. A FULL out exterior detail. Cars 14 yrs old so paint was a tad worn and is black. 50 bucks an hour for 11 hours. I tell you what though the car looks better than it did in 1993. A regular detail will run 150-200+ for a large vehicle. To do anything other than this will cost you. At least around here thats what it goes for.:o |
