Time for New Brake pads
Should I go with OEM replacements?
Is there anythiing better out there? What should I expect to pay for OEM Pads? What should I expect to pay for an upgraded pad? |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
How many miles did you get outta the factory pads??
|
Re: Time for New Brake pads
almost 52K
|
Re: Time for New Brake pads
:twak: Just got a quote from the dealer...$530.00 for front and rear pads.

Re: Time for New Brake pads
Yep...installed.
Pads are 150 Front and 140 rear. |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
Usually the front brakes wear out sooner than the rear brakes.
There is no need to replace the rear pads if they are still good. I don't like turning the rotors unless they are scored. |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
They said I needed both.
|
Re: Time for New Brake pads
52K. Must be that extra weight (of the add-ons to the H3 I mean, I wanted to make that perfectly clear).

I have to agree 100 %. Hard to understand how the rears would be worn out the same time the fronts are worn out. The fronts do 70-80 percent of all the braking, and should at least twice as fast. Fronts at 52K sounds about right. BUT...$530? Can't say if that is a good price of not, since I would do my own brake job. Hardest part is jacking up the front or rear and removing the damn heavy tires. I also agree on the rotors. If they are not scored, or warped, do not turn, unless it is a finish turn just to remove any possible pad residue that might be on the rotor(s). Too many people have this philosophy of turning rotors in their heads, and usually, it is not required. GM has published hundreds of bulletins on NOT turning rotors if not required. Removing the metal mass will cause overheating to damage the rotors faster than if left at standard mass. OEM pads are excellent, however, there could be others out there just as good. Raybestos, Warner, Bendix are three good name brands, but not sure if they make any for the H3. Also not sure at this time, what other vehicles might use the same pads. (I'll try and check tomorrow for ya.) I would guess you can get the pads a lot cheaper from GM Parts Direct. |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
The BS part of it is, I had them inspected at 46K and they still had a bunch of wear left, is it funny that is 6k miles they need to be replaced?

Maybe for the hell of it take them somewhere else for another look. |

Yes!!But I've had it happen on past vehicles. |

Yes and no. Hard to really estimate the time left on a set of brake pads. Personally, I know you have good relations with your Dealer, but a second opinion does not hurt.:dancingbanana: |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
Thanks, but I gave the go ahead.
|
Re: Time for New Brake pads
On my 2002 Avalanche with 11 inch rotors on back rear pads were worn out at 45000 km, about 30,000 miles and front were still over half there. Couldn't figure it unless there is some weird biasing with the ABS system. Was first time in my life I ever replaced rear and not front. Usually rear last at least twice as long as front. Re: Time for New Brake pads
Too much BTM'ing. ;)

Re: Time for New Brake pads
For future reference:
15240794 Pad Kit, Frt Disc Brk ? Retail 149.25; trade 111.94; 15240812 Pad Kit, RR Disc Brk ? Retail 137.72; trade 103.29 Pads do not show as being used on any other GM vehicle. So, for the limited number out there, non-OEM pads may not be produced...yet. |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
Checked aftermarket, no such critter as of yet.

Re: Time for New Brake pads
Thank F5 and parts guy....f-off Sewie and Neo :fdance:
BTW, they offerd me a loaner today...seems as if there MAY be some tranny trouble. I was telling Sewie when I was following him down a steep muddy incline in Hollister I had it in 1st/low, the truck seemed like it was coasting. When I stopped and put it into second the engine braking returned....so....tranny time? Makes me wanna :blech: |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
Your at 52k what about warranty with trans :crying: ?

The symptoms started at 49K, I have the GMPP, but so far they haven't said yet whether or not they will cover it......but they did offer a loaner, could be a goodwill thing...could be a "feel sorry for her" thing. I will probably hear tomorrow when I go pick up my loaner. I doubt I'll get much sleep tonight.:crying: |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
tranny problems, there's a new one....

Say hello to a new "overrun" clutch. If it slips in manual first gear, that is the component I would say is failing. Could be first clutch housing, but that manual first slipping????? It should be covered under the extended warranty, and if you didn't have an extended warranty, with enough barking, GM/Hummer might cover most of it or all of it; especially since you have maintenance stuff done at the dealer. (It does pay at times to pay the dealer for customer pay items.) |

Easy repair, a lot easier than an overrun clutch, which requires trans R&R, then disassembly. The valvebody is removed by simply removing the oil pan and quite a few bolts. Not there, so not sure, but is it the complete valvebody or some of the internal valves, that are replaceable? Strange an entire valvebody goes. Oh well, important it gets fixed. |
Re: Time for New Brake pads
Part is being overnighted...will have my HUMMER back tomorrow.:excited:

Yep! It should be ready.
I have to tell you, I walked into the shop last night to get my cell charger out of my truck...I have NO IDEA how those guys work in those conditions. It was 104 here yesterday and that shop could not have been much cooler. Just awful. |
