I couldn't firgure out a good place or method for locating the HiLift, so I bolted it on.

I used two, 3"x 1/2" grade 8 bolts with shoulders, lock washers and Nylock nuts.

Drilled a 1/2" hole all the way through the carrier and attached the bolts as seen in the pic above.

I then mounted the HiLift on the bolts and used one Nylock nut on one side. I didn't tighten it all the way.

When it's time to go wheeling I'll just pull the Nylock and replace it with another wingnut.

On the otherside I used a wingnut.

The problem with mounting the jack back here is you will hit the tailgate when you lower it.

So now if I open the tailgate, I remove the wingnut and swing the jack down out of the way.

Piece of cake.

Finished product.

One last thing, the bolt holes MUST be precise. You can't bend anything to fit. I found out the hard way.

rodster 01-20-2006 11:58 PM

Nice work, <STRIKE>Macgyver</STRIKE> Ken. Very clever design!

KenP 01-21-2006 12:27 AM

I wanted the 60", but I'd have nowhere to put that monster.

I was going to mount mine like yours, but the tire is in the way. That is going to change, I promise that.

I like the little padlocks. Instead I ran a 3ft cable lock around the back of the tire carrier and through a couple of jack holes.

For drilling through the metal I used a Black and Decker brad point 1/2" bit on a cordless drill. I couldn't believe the cordless worked better than the air drill. Must be a torque thing because the cordless went through it like butta'.

KenP 01-21-2006 12:28 AM

Oh, isn't our jack nice and shiney.

CslRkH2 01-21-2006 12:47 AM

Do you guys also carry a base for the jack of some sort? If so where?

Yes, in a Trail Duty gear bag in the bed of the truck.

CslRkH2 01-21-2006 12:58 AM

How big is the base you use?

I really like the install Ken...but with the GOBI ladder I don't think it would work for me. I'm going to have to find something soon...[cough] hi-lift mount for the stealth rack[cough cough]

Hey has anyone heard from timgco in awhile??

You should get one of these... Handle Keeper

DDWH 01-21-2006 01:22 AM

It's the one pictured here: http://www.hi-lift.com/products/offroadbase.htm Can't say that I ever measured it but I'd guess it to be 10 inches square.

Here is a link from Az Hog on mounting a Hi-Lift Jack on a SMA Tire Carrier, it will work for H1 & H2.

the web site is www.azhog.com

Look under Hummer Technical Information, and then look for Hi-Lift Jack Mounting for SMA Tire Carrier for H1 & H2.

I did the mount on my H2 and the cost for parts was right at $20.00

Mount it to your ladder.

rodster 01-21-2006 02:50 AM

Ken - You going rack free on this truck?

KenP 01-21-2006 03:11 AM

Yes, for now I am.

rodster 01-21-2006 03:24 AM

I like the look (a lot) as is. Can't imagine adding even a few more inches to the height!

KenP 01-21-2006 03:38 AM

You aren't kidding.

Not sure the door would open (on its own) with 40 lbs on there.

I'll probably just continue to use the 'bungie it to the rack' method until GOBI comes through.

I have the rubber handle keeper and like it. Keeps the metal separated.

timgco 01-30-2006 12:30 AM

Damn, I missed this whole thread! Nice job Ken!!!!! Looks good.

KenP 01-30-2006 12:34 AM

Thanks Tim.

Any methods out there of mounting it on the OEM roof racks?

However, if you want to do that here is how:

You MUST use a 13mm NUT, not threads, but wrench size, on the inside of the rack so it will fit snuggly in the underside grooves of the rack and not spin while tightening the bolt from above. You would need two of these to hold the jack in place.

Here's a pic of my CB antenna mount and you'll get a better understanding why this method is not a wise choice. Then you remove the bolt, the nut will fall, you'll have to pull the rack caps and.... PITA

Now if you used a bolt from the underside, you'd still need to find a way to hold it in place.

I've got it! Use a bolt with a wrench size of 13mm and 2" in length and run it UP through the rail and secure it with a nut and lock washer. Put your jack on top running the bolts through the holes and use a couple of wing nuts to hold it down.

Damn, that took me some time to get to, huh?

tomp 01-30-2006 01:44 PM

Damn, I think I actually understood you

That's a good idea, thx Ken...

PARAGON 01-30-2006 03:12 PM

I've been unavoidably detained lately and missed this thread.

Ken, did you mark your holes on the Hi-Lift so that you don't have to guess which ones to line back up with the bolts?

I considered one of these Jack Guards if I were to do a rack or maybe try to make it work on the front or rear.

But, I'll probably have an X-Jack by our next trip to use instead of the Hi-lift. Besides I broke the little switch release thingy on mine.

Ipedog 01-30-2006 03:24 PM

That think looks like some sort of comic book Death Ray! Don't try to go through an Airport with that!

Mr. I - Man 01-30-2006 06:02 PM

Is it possible to mount the jack lower so you don't have to do the wing nut thing????

For an SUV yes. Take a look here at H2Finally's method: http://elcova.com/groupee/forums/a/t...68/r/818102768

With the SUT fold down gate, maybe. I'm guessing you have to mount it way off center so that when you swing the arm all the way open it leaves room for the gate to open. See Ken's fourth picture. It gives a pretty good idea of how much/little room there is between the vertical on the carrier and the gate. I wonder if you could tuck it under the gate just a little to keep it from being really off center. Ken?
