Road trip across OZ

25 Attachment(s)
Flew into Melbourne and picked up the H2...at last... Bought a bit of gear like a 60" jackall, 6 jerry cans, a spare battery, snatchum strap and a few odds and ends in preparation for the trip home to Perth.

H2 was looking great, when I returned to the workshop to load the 4 extra wheels and 2 rims I'd bought the guys had no idea what the Jackall was for.... They don't see a lot of the H2's wheeled here in OZ, matter of fact they reckoned mine was going to be the first!!!

In summary I covered 4125 KM ( 2563 M ) 64.3 Hrs driving time, ave speed 64.15 Kph ( 39.86 Mph ) Pretty quick eh...not. Used 903.7 L ( 238.7 Gal ) which equals 4.56L/Km, 20.5L/100Km ( 10.73 MPG ) H2 only had 2800 Km's ( 1739 M ) on the clock when I picked it up.

The H2 was a pleasure to drive, some days were very long, 15 odd hours behind the wheel in tight bush and no soreness at all. Dust sealing is spot on, as will be seen in some pics. Roof rails aren't really up to the job when carry-ing a load over continuous rough corrugations, matter of fact they kept coming loose and are just about shagged now, will have to fab up something more substantial if I keep them.

All in all I'm over the moon with the H2.

Looks GREAT!

Just got back from Africa last night. After seing your pics, I've decided to take mine to Africa and do a couple of months in the bush. Starting Monday, I'm going to begin the process of making the plans! (Shipping the truck, insurances, etc., etc..)

What I'd love to know is if there's anyone else in joining me on the trip???

Mate, I've often thought about it but the insurance out of OZ is horrendous, they require a cash deposit of 4 x the vehicle value, for me here that would mean nearly half a mill, all for a drive in the country. I looked at immigrating to UK and then doing it from there but it all got too hard. If it goes pear shaped for you maybe you could consider coming here to OZ, there's still a bit of open space here !!!, maybe not quite the same on the Big Game front though.
I enquired about taking a vehicle to the US and it would only be $7K return. I have contacts here that ship vehicles out of the US to OZ on a regular basis if it's of any use to you.

I shipped one of my Porsches to Europe a couple of years back. I bought the insurance there, through Lloyds. My insurance isn't any good out of the country, and I expect that hold true for most. That why I'm looking at doing from someone over there.
I have a contact with a shipping agent out of Miami who tells me he can ship it to Senegal and return for $3000.00 US. I don't have all the details yet, or if that's even a good price.

Re: Road trip across OZ

OZ the pics are really great.

I was going through enjoying them and noticed the camera was on the wrong side. I went on another pic looking through the rear and my goosh the steering wheel is on the passenger right side of your rig. I figured I better get to you and recommend that you go in for service right away as it appears the factory made a mistake.

I'm amazed you were not wore out having to drive next to the dirt side of the road and not seeing the center line. Be careful until you get to Hummer service so they can move the steering to the left so it matchs the other H2's that come out the factory.

I bet it was a Monday build truck and guys at factory just figured since it was being shipped way off they would play a prank on somebody. I bet they will have a big hoot when it get's back to them how mad you got at the dealer service.

Well drive safe till you get it fixed.

OZ-
Wonderful pictures, makes me want to get down under there all the more. (Someday I hope)

Now a few questions from the confused yank.
OZ =? (outback zone?)

Was the H2 exported with the right hand drive, or did you have to have it converted afterwards. What's the additional charge to get a right hand drive H2?

If the insurance were to cost more than the vehicle (as per your comment on taking it out of the country) what's the point in insuring it at all?

Thanks, it's a great place to visit and live, more layed back in the West than the East.

Short for Australia or Aus....

Was the H2 exported with the right hand drive, or did you have to have it converted afterwards. What's the additional charge to get a right hand drive H2?

It came out as a LHD and was converted here in OZ, cost an additional $40K AU to get it done, it can be done cheaper but you get what you pay for.... Total cost on the road with isurance = $141K, people nealy have kittens when they see it in the bush...but hey, that's what it's built for.

If the insurance were to cost more than the vehicle (as per your comment on taking it out of the country) what's the point in insuring it at all?

Without the insurance one is not able to get it cleared to leave the country, that is why I thought of immigrating to UK and doing it all from there.
