Apple Announces iPhone 3G

After months of anticipation, the heavily rumored 3G iPhone was announced today during Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference Keynote.

Features
- 3G-capable. 2.8 times faster than EDGE.
- GPS built-in
- Thinner
- Better battery life - 300 hours of standby, 2G talk-time 10 hours (as opposed to 5), 5 hours of 3G talk-time (competition is 3 hour 3G talk time), 5 to 6 hours of high-speed browsing, 7 hours of video, 24 hours of audio.
- flush headphone jack

Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries for $199 for 8 GB and $299 for 16 GB. The 16 GB model also comes in white.

It will be available in many countries, even in Canada :orly: :giggling:

Memory still topping out at 16GB, so I think I'll wait on upgrading for now.

I'll be buying it soon. But I'm gonna wait a couple of months after the first release to let them get the bugs out. I wouldn't wait if I didn't already have one. But 50% of the time I surf by WIFI and 3G isn't gonna speed that up.

I had hoped for more stuff that just GPS and 3G. But that itself is enough to warrant another $299 for a new phone.

Now that the SDK is out, I'm waiting for someone to come up with copy/paste functionality. That is the #1 thing on my list besides 3G.

I'm with CO - I'm going to wait a month or two so they can work out the bugs. The it'll be a Friends of iPhone free-for-all.:jump:

Well going through 4 rounds of the playoffs all the way to game 6 of the stanley cup takes up a lot of memory. ...

Bugs what bugs? The phone you have now will have the same software as the 3G. I got mine on the first day and there's not a thing wrong with it. Also the FCC requires them to test the sh!t out of them before they get a license anyway. The idea of getting the bugs out is ridiculous.

Wait because there has to be a better one coming out soon. A lot of people are not satisfied. This phone is to increase the market share, but soon they will actually make something that's a substantial improvement.

Think that new $199 iPhone is going to save you money over the older $399 model? Guess again.

AT&T is raising its minimum monthly service subscription for the new iPhone from $60 to $70 per month, according to the Associated Press.
That's an extra $240 over the lifetime of the two-year contract ? more than the $200 initial savings on the handheld's retail price.

This is not an increase. Its the standard (existing) rate for 3G service, and apparently the higher cost of 3G service is consistent throughout the telcoms

PS you can still get around this snafu if you want to unlock it its just going to cost you more than if you got the contract with Att.

Now that Apple has let outside developers design software for the phone it will be one of the most amazing breakthrough devices to come out in a long time. Some better chips and more memory and soon the iphone will be more capable than you laptop from 3 yrs ago.

I can't figure out why people would buy such a mamby pamby phone. If you drop it in a puddle or on the grocery store floor. POOF!! It's busted.

Hahaha! This might just be the first documented case of iPhone enragement!

Bull. There were bugs. That's mostly what the first two updates fixed. One example was the sudden crashing of safari when surfing.

Never happened to me. You probably got one of those special ones.

I did have one strange problem, strange because of the fix. After having the headphones in on one occasion I could not get the phone to work in standard phone mode, i.e hold to ear hear voice in spkr. and talk. It onl worked with headphones or in spkr phone mode. I went to the mac store told them what was happening and the guy took a set of headphones and plugged them in and out 5 times. Everything worked again, I looked at the guy and said "of course" and left. :giggling:

Oh by the way that was a software problem you mentioned. Your going to get those wether you wait or not.

not really got it the week it came out so i got a great use outta mine, and when this breaks ill buy a new one, the 2.0 update for the old one is coming out the same date so then the only difference is the new one runs on 3g instead of edge other than that a small size difference its the same phone. So if you have the older one it doesnt matter whatsoever, unless the extra 5 seconds itll take to load a web page annoys you.

i just hope they hope they expand the 3g coverage pretty quickly, before the iphone i had a blackjack and 3g only worked in manhattan.

How the ones who owned EDGE IPhones felt when the better cheaper IPhones came out is comparable pain similar to the Penguins fans when they were so sure they were gonna win the Stanley.

I have one - I use it on my boat - it is definately waterproof - I dropped it in my pool one day - while on a call - and it did not leak and I did not drop the call.
It is a bit big - it is heavy but it is perfect for me - I am in Angola at the moment and the dust is a killer - nothing gets into this case though.

You do have to use a bluetooth headset - I use the Jawbone.

Everything is fully functional - the only things that you cant do when it is in the case is access the silence switch on the side and charge / sync. It is easy to get in and out of the case - just two flip latches - and you can use regular headphones with it - the inside of the case has a headphone jack that slides into the connector on the phone with a regular connector (waterproof) on the outside.

The touch screen works well - you do get a slight oil on water look if the membrane sticks to the screen - but it does not affect the way it works - it just looks a bit funky - but I didnt buy the thing for the looks - it has saved my phone several times.
