Dirty. that's a good point, but let me add to it.

I used to have a 99 Cobra with a 10 PSI ATi ProCharger. The car was fast and any cop pulling my ass over new it. One time I was being pulled over by a officer and I basically followed everything you listed that you do when being pulled over. With one small difference.

As I pull the car over immediately shut off the engine. I take the car keys out and will do either one of two things.
1) Toss the keys onto the roof of the car and place both hands on top of the steering wheel.
2) or hold then in left hand (say you have a vert or your in your H2) with fully left extended arm palm open out the window while the right hand is on the top of the steering wheel.

The first time I did this (and the first time this was not preplanned) the officer approached and asked, "Why did you toss your keys to the top of the roof of your mustang?" I replied, because you guys have enough to worry about and the last thing you need to worry about is me potentially trying to take off on you.

Believe it or not, I think this action on my part worked, as he let me go ticket free. Never have I got away with a ticket before. I think it is effective because you are acknowledging his power in the situation while putting his anxiety at ease.

The first time I did that as I stated above it was not pre thought out, but it worked so well, I do that every time. Tried it after that, and it worked again.

Thoughts?

What do they say after you tell them you have a gun in here, or a rifle under here? I ask because I carry my glock around from time to time, and always wondered if I would just say "hey, I have a weapon under the seat"

If I was armed and stopped I would have no problem informing the officer where the weapon was located. To do otherwise is just plain stupid.

In VA CWP's are in the officer's computer, so you might as well 'fess up. No need to be an idiot.

I'm licensed to carry for 12 years now and in class one of the first things they taught was A) You are in the computer and they know as soon as they run Your tags and B) show them the courtesy and inform them before they run You and tell them what the weapon is and where it is. I asked an officer about this last year as I just had a chance to bring it up in a casual convo. He said that it is the smartest thing You can do is tell the officer everything concerning the weapon in advance and offer to take out Your permit. He may think You are trying to hide something when He runs Your id. The more honest You are up front He said the more likely He will let You go with no problems. He also said He likes to see keys placed slowly on top but, not really needed just His preference and the same as most of the officers He knows. He also said He absolutely likes to see windows rolled down and hands on wheel. I did not think to ask about int. lights on and he did not offer.
Sounds like most all have a good logic going in this area.

Before we get a race war going here, respectfully, I would like to point out where I think this went awry. There are two ways people carry firearms in their vehicles. Legally (with a permit) and illegally concealed. In many states and counties, it's virtually impossible to get a carry permit.

If you are not licensed to carry and have weapons in your vehicle, unless you have some reason to anticipate that your vehicle will be searched, you should probably not bring up the issue of firearms unless asked. If asked, answer truthfully. If you are carrying them legally without a permit (in California), you are just on your way to or from the range; your weapon(s) are unloaded and are in a locked case or locked cases, which has (have) no ammo in it (them). The case(s) is (are) not within reach of any occupants of the vehicle.

I will admit that listening to that woman writhe while being tased was not very pleasant. However, I think the arresting officer went well beyond generosity in giving her numerous opportunities to comply with his polite orders, despite her abrasive, aggressive and non-compliant attitude. Allowing her to continue talking on the cell phone, physically removing her or peppering her would have exposed the officer and his partner to a higher level of risk. Tasing was CLEARLY the most appropriate course of action. And even at that, the officers were exposed to potential risk from blood borne pathogens (if you listen to the tape).

First of all, I like police officers, and I always show respect and get off with a warning.

Second, Tazers are very effective defense weapons and should remain legal for citizens, as that has been in jeopardy.

Phil - I cant remember getting very far with comments like that in the UK to be honest - no sense of humour in the constabularies that I tried that in.

I do remember getting a ticket during the Bosnian war - I was on the M4 at 5.30 in the morning - cruising along on my bike - cop pulled me over - he went on to tell me that the laser speed gun that he had caught me speeding with used the same advanced technology as the weapons systems they were using in Bosnia.
I said "Its just as well that I am not a farm tractor pulling a trailer of refugees then or I would be f####d" - like I said - no sense of humour - instant ticket and points.

Don't pretend to know what would be the best option to use in a situation when you have absolutely no experience from an officer's standpoint. To second guess an officer on his tactic in a non-lethal, non-use of force is just stupid. It get's no more simple than that, stupid. If he would have tried to drag her out of the car by force, then your sorry ass would be sitting here typing about how they mistreated her and bruised her by forcing her out of her car.

Until you have walked up to a vehicle with a law-breaker inside, cut the officer slack first, not the damn law-breaker. While there are a few bad cops, to sit in your Lazy-boy and second guess the people out there laying the life on the line every day just like the soldier is doing by saying he should not have used a non-lethal method is nothing but a f'ing ****bird way of looking at life.

I got a better method for stopping cars for a traffic stop, its quick painless no suffering(since the taser and the pepper spray is so ****ing terrible) one warning shot up it the air, and the vehicle doesn't stop light the bitch up. It works in Iraq and no witnesses no lawsuit. Now is pepper spray that bad. Pussy ass civilians.
