Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

on 2003 H2's you could get the dealer installed rear tire carrier which also included a setup to move your liscense plate to the driver side.

I'm having a problem where I'm not getting any juice, my ground is fine, and I've tested 3 light bulbs. But the postive just gets so jumbled up that at the time I didn't have the time to track it, can any one give me some info on how this works?

Oh and checked fuses didn't see any burnt ones, though may not have checked the correct ones, but I didn't see anything.

License Plate Light Wiring Instructions
1. In front of rear bumper underneath vehicle on driver side, locate cluster of three plugs. The white
plug housing should have no existing wiring.
2. Remove the white plug housing from receptacle by pushing in the tab and pulling down.
3. Remove the wire retainer from the plug housing.
4. Remove the two orange plugs as shown in drawing.
5. Push terminal ends for tag light into plug as shown in drawing.
6. Replace wire retainer.
7. Route plug housing and wire back to receptacle and plug in firmly to engage tabs.
8. Use provided wire ties to secure excess wire.
Photo below shows finished installation.
9. Install license plate
10. Turn vehicle lights on, check to see that license plate light functions

Diagram is the factory wiring the truck came with. Instructions below are the ones we would get with the SMA tire carrier kit. For some reason it would not let me copy and paste the pictures. Google hummer sma tire carrier and you should be able to find what ya need

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

let me rephrase it's not an aftermarket tire carrier but rather the dealer installed one, it was sold new with it in 2003

In 2003 the only tire carrier was the sma one. I installed many of them prior to delivery. At the time GM didnt offer an outside spare tire carrier.

Not to go off topic but how exactly does the shaft go into the hinge? My tire carrier is so stiff I have to put some real muscle into it to get it to move either way.

But back to wiring

Again hate to go off topic but

How many of these have you corrected?

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

Thats the sma carrier. Look under the truck behind the rear bumper and you should find the wire that was connected for the light. Cant remember what fuse it runs off though been a long time since ive seen one in the shop

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

That was one of the reasons they quit making them. too many warranty claims on the pivot seizing up. Try spraying it with good penetrating spray once a day and working it back and forth

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

Its a steel shaft that slides down into a brass bushing

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

Yea my brass bushing cracked apart real pia, but doesn't that tsb call for some pieces to be replaced to correct the problem

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

Oh I see, I do like the carrier in the way it is seperate from the tow hooks unlike the new ones, but I've planned everything that I do around the basis that my rear door doesn't even exist the majority of the time lol.

But yea.

Anyways so you don't remember what the hot wire connects to/ splices into?

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

Or I mean the brass bushing on the connecting T handle cracked, not on the hinge/pivot side.

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

If it was installed as per directions it should pass through the rear plastic bumper fascia. From there follow it to where it terminates and check for power at that point. I would be willing to bet power is there and problem is from where it terminates on the truck to somewhere towards the light itself. I will try to locate where the fuse is for ya but info is foggy on aftermarket installed parts

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

You could have someone or yourself drill the brass bushings out and install new ones, or plastic/neoprene bushings to match. Would work much better than brass.

Re: Wiring diagram or info for liscense plate remote location

Alright figured it out, turns out that the power source for the license plate light is spliced into place from the trailer light hookup.

I could of swore I had checked that fuse twice at least, but sure enough when I checked it, it was blew.

I'm guessing it's probably from towing other peoples' trailers specifically ones that had, had hard lives and featured 1 out of 10 of the lights functioning lol.
Otherwise I'm at a loss why it would blow.
