HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

Okay...let the story of my drama H3 continue....

Started driving home Tuesday from Paragon. Got the speed up to around 60mpg and there was a gawd awful noise and vibration. Called my local dealer who informed me to contact Onstar to find the nearest Hummer dealership....which ended up being in Allentown PA...an hour east of where I was. So....head to Scott Hummer in Allentown. They pull my truck in thinking perhaps the problem was a U-Joint or a Wheel Bearing.

First thing they do is rotate and balance my tires..."just to rule out".
Of course...that didn't fix the problem. So about 4hours later they tell me....are you ready for this....MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL "was shot". (keep in mind I just had the front replaced 3 weeks ago and from that, I now have a front axle seal leak that was to be corrected).

The Service Manager at Scott Hummer tells me that they have replace about 4 early build date H3's rear diff. GM has told them that "they have found a containment/chemical of some kind in the differential housing that cause the breakdown of the internal parts. No point in replacing the internal parts, b/c the breakdown will happen again. So instead we have to replace the whole differential...meaning completely everything except the wheels. This will take about 7days". (just glad it didn't have anything to do with my "sassy wheeling skills". ;) )

Thanks so much to HiMobility and his family for opening up their home and allowing a "slummer" to stay there. :p :D

So....left my poor H3 in Allentown, PA...with hopes that it will be shipped to my local dealer in about 1 week. I've contact Hummer and my "case" has been escalated beyond customer service to a "case manager". Time to play hard ball. :mad:

I just got home tonight around 6ish. 10hour drive is never too much fun.

BEWARE those with the early build dates.....your break down of the rear diff. maybe be happening soon.:(

Sorry to hear about your baby. Makes me wish I had paid more attention to when mine was built. Though I'm pretty sure it was early this year.

Goldilocks:
Your H3 diffs are too small;
Hi-Mo's fire-breathing brakeless H1 is too big;
Time to try the one that's just right - H2 ;)
Brakes; diffs, they've got it all (excepting the tie rods).:D

Just kidding.:D

Sorry about the road-trip difficulties Hi. I bet he was tired. However, isn't this the perfect opportunity to get a locking rear diff for the Sass-mobile???

I think it means "if your H3 was built between Jan 2004 and June 2006". :D

That's not nice CO :D

It means your were the first 800-1000 H3's produced.

Sorry to hear about that Hi-Honey. What a bummer. It is going to be covered under warranty, right???

I think the H3 warranty fund has a junk bond rating now.

Re: HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

AAM produced some axles, prior to Aug. '05 that had lapping compound left on the gearset. Usually, within 3-5K miles, the axle would be too loud to be drowned out by a Monsoon system. :D Some happened with earlier mileage, some after 5K; depending on the amount of lapping compound.
As the gearset wears, it can cause some vibration problems.
AAM foots the bill for this repair, which is a quick swap of the axle. Easy diagnosis, pull the cover and see if there is sandy substance floating in the lube.
I would have thought most are replaced, but evidently there are a few out there that are still with low mileage or with small amounts of compound.

Re: HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

FYI on the mileage...don't get past 3-5k and think you are okay. My front diff. went out around 19k and I'm at 21k now w/ the rear. Yes....I drive...a lot....:)
