I am looking at the rear tire carriers for the H2. Wanted to check and see which one people preferred. Is it the SMA, Predator, or Adventure Accessories? Also any thoughts on the best prices for them other than e-bay? Any help would be appreciated.

Alaska H2:
Welcom eot the forum and congratulations on your very wise purchase.

I do not carry a spare, that is what OnStar is for .

If you do a search on this site you will find more than enough info including prices, positives, negatives and general impressions and "rattle" issues. Have fun...

I have a SMA rear tire carrier and am happy with it. I do not have any rattles. I paid $799 for mine. I later saw SMA units for $660 at http://www.theptking.com/eshop/produ...?intProdID=117

I am trying to decide between the SMA and the Adventure Accessories tire carrier. They are both about the same price, but heard about some rattle issues with the SMA. So just wanted to see peoples opinions prior to ordering one.

Relying on Onstar here in Alaska can be sketchy at best.

Thanks.

When I was looking for my tire carrier, I looked at all the carriers available. I maybe wrong but I think I remember some of the carriers used a C channel for the members construction. My SMA carrier uses a full box framed member for its construction. As I said before my carrier does not rattle.

All:

I will be demo-ing the lifts from www.tire-lift.com in the near future and will let you know what I think. They have both a hand screw and electric screw versions which lower the tire down after swinging it away from the vehicle.

Probably too late for Alaska2...sorry!

Hey Alaska2....any more word on the first H2 crash ever reported there in Anchorage? It was being driven by the local dealer when it collided with 4 other vehicles.

I have the SMA tire carrier. Mine does rattle a bit.. However I donot notice it now.. All I know that it is great not to have that big tire in the inside of the cab.. I now have almost as much room in the back as my daughters Toyota matrix.. But like she says. Dad your H2 is still coller then my Toyota.

Thanks for the information.

The accident photos that you have all seen was driven by the owner of the local hummer dealership. 5 cars totaled and only 2 minor injuries in the accident. The hummer and truck photo circulating is the last vehicle that he hit. So considering it wiped out 3 other vehicle prior to the big truck it faired pretty well.

Big C I am leaning toward the Adventure Accessories unit cause it looks a little cleaner than the SMA. Let me know what you come up with for a price to Anchorage.

Thanks again.

The SMA Carrier is offered in the H2 Source's online store as well. We are offering it at $665 (plus freight).

*** Be sure to add items to your cart for actual pricing. ***

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Jason

I have the tire carrier from Adventure Accessories. It's great and easy to install. It has a nifty little round recessed latch (no pin).

AlaskaH2 10-22-2003 10:31 PM

Thanks for the input. By the pictures it looks like is a nice set-up. Any problems with rattles or anything? Thanks again.

If you have not purchased your tire carrier yet just a little info for you, I'm with Hummer of Marietta we only use the SMA carrier they have taken care of the rattle issue. It mounts into the same holes as your d rings (so no new holes to br drilled) they have made a rubber insert on the coupling your swing arm goes into so as to latch it. No rattle, simple adjustment perfect tire carrier.
We also are a custom hummer dealer if you guys need any help (buying an h2 or just need direction on some assessories let me know jmc247@bellsouth.net

Here's my two cents worth.
First I would always check the H2Source online store first, for anything you want to add to your H2.
Second, since it appears you are taking the time to make sure you purchase the right product for your H2 I will tell a few highlights about mine. My tire carrier comes with a step, the hinge is made of 316 grade stainless steel so there is no need for a messy grease fitting, the tire is offset to the passenger side to increase view out of the rear view mirror, I use a heavy duty stainless steel draw latch (2000 lbs)that actually pulls and holds the tire down in place, the latch is concealed behind the tire, the tire only has to be opened 90 degrees to allow the rear door to open. This is beneficial in a parking lot, or if someone parks to close to your side. Last but not least the tire locks in the open position so you don't have to hold the tire open if you are parked on a slant. You can view some pics on the H2Source online store or my website below.
Ok maybe that was five cents worth.
Good luck on making a decision I hope this helped and gave you something to think about.
