I would say the Y2K would be your better bet. I saw that its in cali, though I dont remember where, if it was serviced at ceriatos HUMMER it will have been properly maintaned. The 96 looks nice but you have ALOT more stuff to worry about i.e has the engine been replaced, the HVAC been upgraded.

Does the 2000 can have the 8 block problem?

MovinH2 01-25-2006 10:03 PM

I have an H2 and I'm also looking to add an H1. I won't be getting rid of my H2 (it's paid off) but would love to get into a used H1 2002 or older for under 60K. What year do you think I'd have to go to in order of stay under the 60k range?

I looked at a 05 Alpha today. 155k said I could take it out the door for 140k. But I would of got shot by my wife as soon as I entered the door when I got home.

At least your wife lets you look at the H1. Mine will drive 2 blocks out of the way just to keep me away from the HUMMER dealership. She's kinda smart that way

The H2 was in for service. Don't tell. LMAO.

Maybe I'll try that one. Can never change the oil too often , right?

That's right. Careful though or you'll walk out without your 155k.

hmrlvr 01-26-2006 12:33 AM

No problem 'cause I'd be walking in without it anyway.

Ahh. The jury is kind of out on that. The block had been redisgned by Y2K and I have not really heard of many if any failures for the Y2K year. However, the block was not FULLY cured until AMG took it over which was the 2001 year.

How bad is this problem guys? I mean should I look for 2001 or newer to stay away from this?

Beastmaster 01-27-2006 02:54 AM

To add to Carey's point.

AMG further complicated matters by having used crappy head gaskets as well, gotten from the same crappy manufacturer that GM used. Both a bad head gasket AND the cracked cylinder issue show similar symptoms.

The ONLY way you'll tell properly is to pull the head.

With that being said - a replacement engine is 3k if you shop around properly. Engine swap will set you back about 2k max.

I would worry more about:

-Upgraded A/C (97.5 or higher)
-Been well maintained
-Low mileage

I have a 98 soft top up for sale. It is in an earlier topic. No issues to worry about with it

MovinH2 01-31-2006 01:01 AM

Could you link me to that post man. I have a feeling your the one that emailed me?

ssgharkness020147 01-31-2006 01:41 AM

I have a Y coded block and I'm not worried. Though, it did give me a scare a while back and I'm not FULLY convinced I dont have a bad head/block. The joys of H1 ownership.

It's about 8 or so down from this one.

MovinH2 02-02-2006 11:50 PM

Thanks but I really wanted one 02 or newer. Let me know if you don't sell it here within a month. I know you have my email.

Michael A 02-03-2006 06:22 PM

Check this link, it has all you ever want to know about cracked blocks and checking for casting numbers on the improved design GM block, or just get an 2001 1/2 or newer with a F VIN motor.
