thats what the hummer dealer charges for there mobil 1 oil change then the service manager says how come we didn't install your super charger? so i tell him because you wanted 5000.00(yes thats 5000.00) more then my installer who is 10 times better then the dealer!! this dealer has to have 75 hummers on the lot. there service area is empty but they make you feel like i'm lucky to be there. (did not by my h2 there 7500.00 over sticker )i would like to kinda be in good with the dealer if something goes wrong. but its just hard to take. why do they want to turn you off like that?

The bottom line, its the "hourly" rate that gets ya, we are like $88 an hour. And whats sad, its not like the old days when us as tech's got a pretty good percentage of the hourly rate, its way low now

But I do understand the frustrations..

what dealer was that, in nj or ny

Joe 10-09-2003 10:51 PM

ouch! That's just a silly number. Even at something stupid like $8 a quart plus filter your looking at less than $70 for parts.

I know when I had my corvette I would bring my own Mobil 1 to the dealer to avoid the 100% markup on it and they would charge labor only, like $20-25 at most. Even if they drop the skid plate on the H2 your looking at a half hour job.

If you take your rig to the dealership for an oil change your an idiot. I got Mobil 1 at Jiffy Lube for 50 bucks.

Piker 10-09-2003 10:56 PM

Let me guess... Ramp Hummer right?

Zing 10-09-2003 11:04 PM

Anybody change the oil themselves? What's involved with the skid plates?

DRTYFN 10-09-2003 11:07 PM

Go buy your Mobil1 at Costco for $23 a case buy a K&N oil filter for $10 at your local auto parts store (you might have to have them order it) part #HP-1007. Either tell them you'll pay for the 15-30 mins of labor or you'll go to the local GM dealer that will probably be more than happy to do it for you.

good guess piker ----- are you going to n.y.c. with us? what color is your h2 havent seen you around town

Let me start by saying I never got around to doing my own oil change but I believe the only reason to remove the Skid Plate is because when draining oil it will splash on it a bit. That's it, cosmetic. Could be wrong.

I am out in bellevue, near seattle in wa state.

Yes, you don't need to drop anything on the under side, just use a couple rags to catch any oil....

My oil changes are free for life.. Just a little perk I guess...

DennisAJC 10-10-2003 02:16 AM

Free for life????? How'd you manage that one?

austoak 10-10-2003 02:49 AM

I just brought mine in today to the dealership where I bought it and it cost me $48.92. for an oil change.

MAC 10-10-2003 02:58 AM

As previously reported, oil and lube job at my Hummer dealer is $150, regular oil, and the service dept is always super busy. That's San Francisco Bay area living cost for you, the land of $1200-$1800 annual auto registration. Z, what's the cost in NYC? we maybe super expensive, but I know NYC is even more expensive than us.

DennisAJC 10-10-2003 03:09 AM

We had a Chrysler dealership caught in the act on camera by a local TV station.

They would bring the car in for an oil change, whipe the filter extra clean, and that`s it!!! CHA-CHING!!!! They did this after a consumers report random check up of dealership service.

It`s not surprising when a small mechanic shop does something crooked, but a fair sized dealership.

I change my own oil. I don`t like my Hummer fondled unless it` absolutely nethethary.

DURAMAX TIM 10-10-2003 07:28 AM

Like crash said wipe off the top of the skid plate.
U don't need a jack to lift it up just roll under and change the oil and filter.
BTW I use a grease from Schaeffers (click here)that isn't lithium based (water based) so it won't mix w/ water and cause wear in the front end.
We found out about this grease 25 years ago when we used to mud run and got tired of replacing the inner Torrington bearings on SFA.
If the seals went bad from the mud the grease still kept the crap out (don't tell a blonde).

Dan 10-10-2003 08:37 AM

That should be a 30 minute job TOPS for them. Tell them if Jiffy Lube can have you out in 20, what's their problem?

Not to mention the fact that I can do an oil change in ½ hour without any nice tools, lift, or creeper. And that's on my wife's Honda which is pretty low to the ground.

How is the service receipt itemized?

Oil - 5x $5.00 = $25
Filter = $8.00
Labor = "Priceless"

Dennis:

I guess that they like me at the dealership, they told me that they would be willing to change the oil on all my cars for free anytime, guess that would also come that in the past 2 years I have purchased 9 cars from them.... May have something to do with it...

DennisAJC 10-10-2003 01:33 PM

Zero,

Well that's a different story. Obviously a case of keeping a valuable customer happy and comming back. The dealership I bought my H2 from, I ended up replacing 4 of my company vehicles with them. But no free oil changes .
