I am seriously considering buying a H3 but every single article/review I have read says the same thing...."Great off road truck but the 5cy engine does't have enough power for this large an SUV." Any feedback welcome! I Really Really want one but not if it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's rear end.

If you're towing a boat or something simliar it may struggle but for driving around town and/or off-roading, the current engine is more than adequate. If you really want to give it a good test, rent one for a couple days. |
The most I would be hauling is a motorcycle. I realize it is a truck but I have driven some SUV's that didn't have enough power to get out of their own way.... The closest Hummer dealer is 1 hour away. I need to just make a point to get up there one weekend and drive one.

If you were to do a search, you will see plenty of discussion regarding the "powerless" H3 engine. I could venture to say that's the number 1 complaint with everyone that owns the H3. Now if your planning on pulling a huge boat or something, maybe rethink the H3. But if your not doing a lot of hauling with it I think you'll be pleasantly sursprised. I have no problem get in and out of traffic, leaving people at the stop light, getting tickets and this weekend I'll get to see how it handles off road. Hope this helps you out a little. ![]() |
The engine is a bit puny, although not quite as bad with the manual. The lack of power is my only complaint with the H3. I was never planning to race anyone, but I would like more passing power, especially since I live in a hilly area. Overall, I love the H3, and if you can live with the lack of highway oomph, go for it.

I agree with the above, it's not a sportscar. I do feel the the I5 has plenty of power for the vehicle. I would say go drive one and make up your own mind.

The H3 has plenty adequate power for most drivers. The only time I feel power deprived is going up long grades on the interstate. In traffic, its response is similar to most sedans.
How come no one (i.e, reviewers) bitches about the Jeep Wrangler's lack of power yet the H3 is a vastly better all-around 4x4. Unlike a Jeep, you can drive an H3 in perfect comfort all day at 80, and around town it drives beautifully. Precise and tight. I wouldn't want to take any of the commonly mentioned competition on a 500 mile trip, but the H3 is fantastically comfortable (and quiet) on a long haul. |

None of the reviewers seem to mention that the Grand Cherokee with the 3.7L is not much faster, and does not have the abilities of the H3. If you want speed, I have a Corvette with a well-built, Supercharged engine, that will give you all the speed you need. (Just have to get the engine back in the damn thing.) |

I pull my wrangler to a dry lake about 50 miles each way, you can hardly tell it is back there. As for power it has plenty for me. I drive a 4x4 Expedition every day for work and it has more power, but I would still rather drive the Hummer.
