Thanks...I guess, I'll deal with it without the dealer..LOL..wet sanding..etc..maybe this spring. Thanks for fast feedback- great board this is.

How bad is it? We had a bad area on our Mini Cooper S I found AFTER I got it home (sound familiar?) I worked it over with a Zaino Bros. claybar and it was smooth as glass. It's worth a try if they won't fix it. (I love Zaino Bros, it's awesome)

theyre all orange peeled from the factory.
i dont know of any american made car that isnt. basically, as someone alluded to, they dont do a final step in the process of sanding and buffing. basically, this is normal from the factory as they sell them. unless urs is worse than any other which i doubt. |

I did the clay bar and followed up with my random orbital polisher with wax. My black H3 turned out perfect. I highly reccomend it.

I believe the internet address is www.zainobros.com. However, any good claybar (mothers, etc.) will work the same, and I love Zaino finishes.
However, I cannot believe a claybar will remove orange peel. It will remove foreign substances in the paint, and if your vehicle was shipped by rail, you could have what is called rail dust. If the orange peel affect is primarily on horizontal surfaces, I would hazard a guess and say it is rail dust or other contaminants. Dealers are paid to remove rail dust, but most don't do it. GM authorizes the use of a claybar or Oxalic acid, either will work, but a claybar, which takes longer, is safer. I'm not a paint expert, but I do work with some, and every time I have had problems with paint, I have called on them, and never have they said to claybar for orange peel. Important thing is if it is bad, have the dealer send it out for a professional buffing. Make sure they don't let the lube rack dude do it, or you will have bigger problems. |
How does the clay bar work? Dose it just pick up contaminants off of the paint surface as you rub it with the bar? do you have to fold it or something to expose a fresh surface as it gets dirty? I have seen these in stores just not sure how they worked.

A great prep before applying wax. your paint will be a slick as ever! |
I am one of the world's greatest advocats of Zaino products. I have used all of it on my vettes since 98 including the clay bar. I honestly do not believe there is anything on the market that can compare, especially for dark colors.
I used the clay bar to remove heavy overspray from my new 98 Vette back in '99. The overspray was compliments of a dumbass in a body shop co-located with an upholstery shop I was visiting at the time. The clay bar made it like new again in less than two hours. I sent the body shop a bill for $100 and they paid me. I generally use the clay bar a couple times a year just to keep the surface of the vette perfect. You can get there 800 number from the web page previously listed and ask for Sal Zaino, he is the ultimate guru. He will talk to you on the phone like you are the only customer he has. He is great! They also have a lot of info on there web page you can print with explicit "how to" details. Hope this helps, good luck. |
