Basically it allows you to operate the accessory power ports after the engine is off. Some have auto shut-offs if the battery starts to die. I'm sure some on here can offer a more technical answer if you like.

It also lets you close the windows/sunroof after you've shut off the engine but before you remove the key (I think).
|
And you can continue to listen to the radio and will stay on until you open the door.

As others have stated, RAP allows you to turn off the vehicle and the power to certain accessories stay hot until a door is opened. The RAP relay will power the radio, wipers, sunroof, power windows, and my radar detector. If the BCM sees a door switch input, the RAP relay is turned off. It will also turn off the relay afte approx. 10 minutes, or if the battery goes below a set amount of reserve power.
There is also another feature called Battery Rundown Protection and Inadvertent Power, where the BCM monitors the courtesy lamps with the ignition turned Off. So, if you leave your courtesy lamps on, and the BCM senses no movement of any of the door switches (open/closing of doors) in a twenty minute period, it will turn off all the courtesy lamps until ignition switch is turned on (or in some vehicles, if a door switch input is received...not sure about the H3 on the door switch input). |
