Hey guys, I am fairly new to this board (3 posts) and new to my H3 (2 weeks). I have a question that I think you guys can help with.

I am going on the snow run here in MI in January and was told to take my chrome tubular assist bars off, is this pretty simple or should I have the dealer do it? Keep in mind I am a banker, not an engineer.

Any ideas?

Oh, and thanks to you're guys' pics, I have also ordered the chrome "Hummer" letters for the front grill which seems to be pretty sharp in you're pics (Haven't gotten it yet).

Well, if you have the mechanical skills of a monkey, have the dealer do it.

If you have the mechanical skills of an 8th grader, you can do this yourself with simple hand tools.

Man, I thought bankers can count. You have FIVE posts, not three.

So it is bolted directly onto the body right?

Is this snow run a dealer sponsored event? If so, can you give some more info. I'm going to pick up an h3 in 2 weeks and would be very interested in going.

Bolted to frame. 8 bolts total. Not too difficult to remove but some of the bolts can be a little hard to get to.

That would be intresting I may consider driveng up for this, although I live in Ohio. Do you know if you have to be a member to join in the fun as I am not. Also is this your 1st hummer or have you participated in this event before.

There are 8, 15mm or 16mm (can't remember which) bolts on the OEM step bars. It's best if you use jack stands to hold the steps in place if your doing it alone. I'm in NC or I would help you. Maybe someone closer would be willing to help if you have any problems.

Sorry, you know us guys just think about that sort of thing 24/7. Hummers that is. What did you think I meant? If you ever want to swap tubes, just let me know. Would love to see you take your off! :O

I take mine off all the time.

Just grab a wrench and socket and go to it. Loosen the bolts starting closest to the tires and work your way toward the middle. Loosen the middle bolts and remove all but two in the center of the step. Slid you legs under the truck and remove the remaining two bolts.

The steps are very light and you can gently set them on your legs and then slide out.

Really, it'll be more frustrating to find the right socket and wrench then to remove the steps.

Oooh baby. I'm only 3 hours from SC.

15 MM socket for my flat side steps. Took them off in about 15 minutes last weekend for a Hummer Happening and put them back on in about 15 minutes as well. Very light; can do it by yourself. Advice about middle bolts last / first is dead on.

1st Hummer, and I don't think you have to be a member, I emailed Pat and he was pretty helpfull if you have questions.
