10k lb tow strap might be good enough for my s10...but I still wouldnt try it.

I saw a 16' x 4" strap rated at about 40k#. Is 16' long enough or should I go with a 30'?

I'd go with the 30'. How much are they asking for it?

Based on several recommendations I went with a 3" wide x 30' long strap rated for 30,000#. I talked my wife into getting me a (Father's day) kit from http://www.recoverygear.com/ that had everything you would need.

I get all of my straps and stuff from Trail Duty. The owner happens to be a member here and he and that South Texas group seems to personally test nearly everthing they sell.

A 3" is the minimum width for the wieght of our trucks. I think a 30" is sufficient for most recoveries.

I carry a 3"X40' strap that I ordered from company up in Canada that makes custom straps (got it before TrailDuty's inception) and an extra 4"x20' just in case. The 4" isn't really that great for "plum stuck" recoveries because it doens't allow much dynamic stretching.

Don't forget a tree saver if your winching or use a snatch block.

And yes, don't allow rednecks to use the hitch ball on their 8" lifted chevys to pull you out of mudpits. That was dumb and I knew better.

Let me say that I've bought things on line from both Trail Duty and Jason (our site host) and have gotten very good service from both. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any product either company carries.
