Anyone having trouble backing up? Ive been thinking about this issue, Especially while in a parking lot. You cant see anything out that back window.

Yeah it's definitely an issue, I am getting a backup camera installed in my nav unit ASAP.

I guess slow and steady backing up and hope nobody is dumb enough to walk behind you.

I'm installing ultrasonic sensors, with a little display that will be positioned on the inside of the rear swing gate, where the center mounted stop lamp is. That way, when backing up, I will hear the beeping, and also see the LED's go from green to yellow to red as I get closer to the object.

I usually don't have passengers in the rear seat, so I keep those seats folded down as much as possible. Not looking forward to having 3 tall people back there. Of course the paper temp isn't helping any either. Backing up is something I've never been fond of so I do have the habit of parking in spaces that I can pull forward to exit.

Are you buying one or making your own? Bought one and put it on an H2 and it sucks. Did see a nice back up camera license frame last week but it was kind of pricey.

I agree, here's a link where i am getting mine. http://www.obstaclesensor.com/?OVRAW=back++up+sensors&O...ensor&OVMTC=standard

dukein:

I'd love to hear how those things work. I don't want to get too crazy by installing a backup camera in a leased vehicle but the devices in that link you posted don't seem too involved. Which one are you getting?

f5fstop 08-23-2005 08:38 PM

Here's where I'm getting mine.
http://www.awellmarket.com/Product_home.html
I'm going to install the ones that hang below the bumper and the reason is, it is next to impossible to install them into the bumper thanks to the location of the license plate.
With the hang below sensors, I can space them out evenly, and if one gets torn off (unlikely) while off-roading, they are about $15.00 to replace.
Also, like the idea of the LED array being in the back so I can view through the rearview mirror as I'm backing up (similar to many factory installed LED systems). If the LED array is installed in the front, you are distracted from looking in the mirrors. Just my opinion.

fstop,

You have some very good points about why you went with that one. Can you please let us know how you like it after it's all hooked up.

dukein 08-23-2005 10:07 PM

I'd like to try the dual US sensor first hand. I will keep you posted.

Raydog 08-23-2005 10:09 PM

That rearview mirror with built in monitor looks cool... I wonder how it actually works though, and how the camera looks from the outside (does it get installed somewhere and sit flush or close to flush with the body?)

Will do. Going to order them this weekend.

I got two "park distance sensors" installed (WAECO, made in Germany) and I feel quite comfortable with them. I'll post pics of the sensors once my rig is completely finished.

Old thread. Sensors didn't work, went with a backup camera.

I'm still using a Hitchcam that was installed by dealer a year ago on my H3.
