Independence Pass AKA DOOM NOTCH

I went over Independence Pass the other day in my H2, and let me say I was happy I went East to West. That road is so narrow, the side that hangs over the edge is crumbling inside of the white line with cones there to help you avoid immediate death. Anyway, if you go E to W, you can hug the side of the road that is along the mountainside.

So on the Aspen side, I had to fold my mirrors in to avoid losing them at some points (I don't know how they survived) because there are spots where the road is so narrow, there is no yellow line. Anyway, about halfway down, there was a spot where a car must have gone over, because there were emergency crews hanging down with tow straps. Anyway, just a little advice. :o

Independence Pass builds character. Drive up Mt. Evans sometimes as well. Or better yet, try Webster's Pass in an H2.

I must congratulate you on that feat! :D

I will have to try those other passes. On our way back from this however, we did pass a scene in Edwards where my friends accountant was killed rafting. We saw the emergency crews and whatnot. So I feel paranoid to go back to Indy Pass.

I went over Independence Pass in 1980 towing a two horse trailer, with roping horses inside of the trailer, my Dad told me it would be a short cut and I could make up time trying to get to a Rodeo that I had to be at. A couple times along the way my buddy had to get of the truck and watch as we try to make a couple of the turns, that was one hell of a trip, and the last time I every went over the pass.

I did Websters in my old Trooper. Didn't have a lot of room to spare. Had to make some 7-pt turns. Does anyone know if H2s have done Websters? What about Blanca Peak?

I've seen old lifted full-size Blazers and Broncos go up it (back when all 3 Jaws were in place). I assume, then, that a lifted, front and rear locked, H2 could do it, but I've never heard for sure. Saw a Unimog go right up like nothing. It impressed me.
