Opinions on Differential Trusses???

http://www.coloradok5.com/moo12truss.shtml

Here is an article I found on the Internet on Differential Trusses.

The Cast Iron version of the H3's front Differential Housing is no longer produced. There is, according to some experts I have talked to, no substitute.

SO, moving on, I have been told the only thing I can do for now is something "custom".

Then, I found this:

What do you think???

A little OTT?

Funny you should mention and axle truss. I was in the shop at work and my shop manager and I were discussing building a thick ring to bolt on to the outside of the front diff cover in the hope that it would stiffen the housing somewhat. I am not sure it's really going to do anything but if I don't sell the H3 in the near future I will have one built. Problem is I have no way to document the success or failure of anything I would have done. At this point I have not broken a diff so quantifying the results will be difficult.

If I do it I will post pic's

My experience with (should I say it????) Jeeps and race cars is that trusses and tougher diff covers do work.

A truss like that won't work on the front diff because its IFS. Something like the rockring from PSC show in red above could be made for the H3, but I'd question whether or not it would really help much. A complete diff cover made out of thicker steel might help, but we wouldn't really know unless someone can afford to do some destructive testing. And of course this assumes that case deflection IS the issue.

Aren't there some weld-on versions for IFS? I think I saw some for a Yota....would that be an option.

As long as I am under warranty, I can afford it:D

After doing some more research, it appears as though this is a common problem. There are also many schools of thought on the cause, and the solutions.

It is interesting, and I am no engineer, that they would use an axel known for it's instability under extreme situations. LandRover, Toyota and the big three have all had problems with this in the past.

I'm not knocking the people who make these decisions, ok, well maybe I am;)

A cheap fix is not always the best one. But there has to be something.

Question is what???
