Where is the OnStar unit?

I am wondering where the OnStar unit for the H3 is located? How can I access the OnStar "brain" unit (it's a enclosed box in most GM cars)?

BTW, I don't have a shop type manual for the H3. Can anyone recommend one?

Why? It's classified, unless you post some pics of your rig and some proof it's yours. ;)

Wow - so a new registered user who has been lurking who now wants to ask a question is a "one question" poster?

Tough crowd.... nice welcome...

Huh??? I would have to have possession of my rig in order to anything with it! I have to prove it to a stranger on the net?

I can't right now - but I don't see the point. I am sure, and having done a search also seen, that others have a questions to this. And I know this is not classified since it is on shop manuals in every other GM car - I am not trying to get inside the firmware! Tough crowd here on Elcova!

To answer your question as to why, the answer is that I am considering when my H3 goes off of the 1 year free plan of not renewing. At that point the device is useless to me and I would rather not have it in tracking my usage since I am not paying for it. So like other GM owners have, I wish to simply unplug it. :)

It's behind the radio... Volume adjustment and all...

But you still need to post pics of your rig!

No problem. Hope you get your H3 soon enough. I have had mine for 9 months now. It's been overall a great ride. A few little issues here and there, but overall so far it's been worth it.

If you really understood how OnStar works, and also understood that OnStar could not give a mouse turd as to where you are, you would understand that disconnecting is not necessary.
Only reason for OnStar to track you is at your request, or the request of the police, and only then with a court order. (Are you wanted for something?)

For those who think that OnStar workers sit around all day long randomly searching for their customers should purchase some more aluminum foil. After all the aliens are looking for you.:D

You should call Onstar when you need this kind of help.

Re: Where is the OnStar unit?

Yeah I see that whole "aluminum foil" name calling in threads from people who posted this before on this forum. Whatever. I don't see why anyone would have a problem with an owner wanting to simply disconnect it period if it was no longer subscribed and therefore used?

It's not an alien thing, no reason to go there. In fact I have looked into it and I am not going to take you to task (or turn this thread into a paranoia thread), but GM has had to admit some things about OnStar.

So like I could care less about that too really (I am using it now), but also I would like to know how to unplug it if I wanted to. In fact it seemed to take a stick to beat off OnStar from signing me up for their diagnostic program so they can pull info on my car when they want to.

Perhaps my will for privacy just makes me one of those old-school American types. To each his own.

Be more afraid of the black box (really silver with a yellow sticker) that monitors your speed....:D

When the module is disconnected, whether you have service or not, the system will probably set a code and turn on a light. Not sure, but the module is in the serial bus circuit, and all the computers check on each other to make sure they are healthy.

Re: Where is the OnStar unit?

the onstar unit is located right in between the iridium crystals and the time warp drive! be careful when disconnecting it, as you don't want to disturb the force field generator located right above it!
