Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
I have several noises inside the cabin now.
There is one near the back in the cargo area and it has driven me almost crazy. I have tried to locate - even have had my wife drive down a cobblestone road with me in the cargo area trying to isolate the rattle, with no luck! (I can be a little obsessive at times!) A new noise is closer upfront and only seems to happen when there is no passenger. Sure enough, the passenger seat is shaking around when no one's weight is holding it in place. There is not much room between the seat and the floor boards and I have not figured out if the bolts holding the seat down are loose, or if the seat itself is loose in it's sliding track. The sliding track looseness happened in a different vehicle I had. There is another intermittent rattle occuring outside towards the front of the vehicle that I have yet to isolate. But trust me, I will!!! I thought it was the skid plates not being fully tightened after an oil change, but checked them out and they fit snug. :D One other sound was coming from the back seat area and I finally isolated it as the rings that hold the seat backs in place when they are up. It seems that the rings squeaked when they rubbed with the mechanism in the seat back that holds them in place in the verticle position. A little squirt of WD-40 every couple months seems to keep that one in check. I didn't want to use heavy grease there, as it can be messy. Anybody else have these issues and if so, please do share. Getting rid of the noises will be better than constantly cranking the stereo like some cheese-eating highschool student!!! |
Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
So far my sunroof rattles which I need to take it in for. I also have a squeak and a rattle in the cargo area that I have not been able to find yet. I just turn up my music louder to drown out the noises :p

Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
I've got a lot of rattles coming from the front. But considering what I do to the truck, I'm not surprised. ;)
For the one in the back, check the spare tire/mount, and the jack. |
Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
rattles will be the price paid for off roading. Get some 3in1 oil and start lubeing up. It is a truck and it will creek rattel and moan. Take it off road enough and she will talk to you all the time like sewies rig.

Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
I have the same rattle out of the front passenger seat when no one is in it. It seems to happen when it is cold, and first drive out. If I grab the upper seat part and apply rear pressure while I am driving, the rattle stops. I am sure now that I am now seeing more about it here, that there is something there that needs a little tweak or lube...
BTW - I have not really off roaded my H3. Just simple muddy paths with no pavement. Nothing really of any strain. |
Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
No inside rattles in my H3, but used mostly on the road.

At the very back of the rail there is a plastic cap. Mine comes loose often. Try that.:D |
Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
Rattle/vibrate some in the front driver side dash...drives me crazy on only when it is at an idle.

Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
Thanks BeBe, I will check that little cap thing on the seat rail. :)
Hyper-sensitivity? Wasn't that post more about that one guy's wife leaving and taking his truck than anything else? I am not a whiner, I just have high expectations and if there is something that bothers me that can be fixed, I refer to my peers for a solution. I have a few other responses, but I will save them for later... How's that for hyper-sensitivity????? |

Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
In the back swing out door, open your jack compartment. Check to make sure everything is tied down securely. Had a rattle back there and that solved it. Got the same noises in the front as well as the sunroof. Happens more during cold weather. It's in the 90's now, no real issues. Pulled the sunroof sunshade up a couple of inches when the roof is open and that seemed to stop the sunroof rattle. The dealership checked the noise upfront in the dash and said it was plastic pieces of the dash and pillar expanding and contacting with cold/heat. Made sense why during warmer weather the noise wasn't there. Passenger seat rattles some. Try repositioning the seatback at different angles. Won't solve it, but may reduce the frequency. Drive smooth. Good luck.

Re: Noises/Rattles inside the cabin
Thank you for all of your helpful posts - you know who you are!!!
After spending some way too obsessive/compulsive time trying to figure out the front seat rattle, it seems that the rattle is coming from the track when the seat is not locked into position. Like if somebody adjusts the seat and it ends up "between positions" or between notches on the adjustment rail, it shakes a bit. I found that if I simply push it forward or back a notch - no rattle. I also spent some hot and sweaty time in the cargo area - it is in the upper 90's now - and specifically looked at the jack and stuff in that aft compartment. I checked the window wiper mechanism too. Nothing seemed to be able to make the sound I have been hearing. I am impressed by the hanging hardware and little fabric package they used for the jack. I reallt think the noise is coming from the little extension arm that secures the back door. I removed it and will see if that was what causes the rattle in the back. |
