Random Revving Problem

I have noticed for a week now that when going uphill at times around 40 MPH, the RPM's are jumping up and down from 1,500 to 2,000. It's very intermittent, and the uphill and speed factors seem to be the only common characteristics. I've been trying to recreate the problem, but I can't. I called OnStar and they said it may be the torque converter clutch, throttle control, or transmission. Any ideas? I'm out of warranty, and would like to maybe see if I can figure out what's wrong myself, or know where to point the tech. Thanks
