i leave mine unlocked most of the time , after a while you get to know when you will need it . just try getting up the obstacle without rear locked , if you start to get some wheel spin push the locker button , truck will usually crawl right up . the next step if still having trouble is BTM , apply the brakes while giving it gas slowly let up on brake till truck starts moving keep that tension on your brake until clearing the obstacle let off brake and unlock rear till next obstacle . leaving the rear locked for long periods can build up heat . think of it as a "use as needed" feature :D we dont recommend doing this without one

beebster and i are the only h3's and the 2's we were with are Moab veterans . the truck will do alot more than advertised :D but dont feel inviencabel we both had front diff failures on our last day but we broke them on an obstacle that busts tons of rigs H1 had busted a axle the day before and it can eat up h2 tie-rods . if your on bigass slick rock just crawl if you try hittin stuff hard and spinnin wheels things can bust  ;)

Heres the view down , beebster and i are the first private owners to take our threes up lions back  :D and thats our story !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and we are stickin to it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: under what kind of condition to lock the rear differential?

just use the foot brake ( regular brakes ) for BTM and going down . put shifter in 1st for going down and you hardly need to use the brakes . i used my brakes only 3 or 4 times coming down lions 1st is really low . dont really need the locker for going down , but have heard it helps slow you even more , i cant tell a difference .
