Steering Knuckle Issue?

Has anyone got a letter from the Department of Transportation saying they would like to come to your house and look at your steering knuckle, because they believe it could be faulty? Just got one today and called the dealer and they said they know of no issues? They took the number it said to call and said they would get to the bottom of it. Just found it funny they wanted to spend 15 minutes looking at my truck.

By the way it came from the Ohio Department of Transportion in care of The State Department of Transportion.

Wow that shocks me. My dealer said they'd call me back if it was anything to worry about. They even said they checked GM for recalls with nothing.. I'm calling them first thing tomorrow.

Yeah me too. I've been pretty happy with them so far too. Still odd to get a letter like that from ODOT though.

that would be because there is no recall because there is nothing to recall because there is nothing wrong.

26 cases and most were the result of wrecks, not the cause.

That's not from ODOT and has nothing to do with ODOT. They just referenced your registration with the state as the manner in which they got your name.

It's from the NHTSA who apparently are doing a random sampling to follow up on the investigation that GM has already done on this.

I just figured ODOT because on the front it has the U.S DOT on the top. Also has Bill Collins at DOT on the back. So this mail is complete trash? I was going to call and see what they wanted to do. Looks like they didn't like the results GM came back with.

the Ohio Department of Transportation is a state agency. The US Department of Transportation is a Federal Agency. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a part of the US Department of Transportation and is who sent out the letter to you.

I think they are doing their due diligence and are doing an independent investigation. GM has already completed an exhaustive investigation into each event and has replied. Obviously they can't close the complaint without their own investigation and you are one that got tagged.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Makes sense now. They will not be getting 15 minutes of my time though.

Why don't you let them inspect your truck? They are obviously looking for something specific that they've seen on the failed trucks.

If they find something it could be a lifesaver!

From the post here it sounds as if the issue was looked over by GM and nothing was found. 26 trucks all in accidents caused it. It wouldn't be that big of deal if my dealer wanted to look it over. But you never know who they have coming to look over the truck, I'm not a big fan of just letting anyone tear into my truck. And for 15 minutes it doesn't sound like they are just going to look at it either. I'll call tomorrow and see what the inspection is all about and what exactly they would be doing.
