Saturday, August 5, 2006 Colorado Trip

I would be interested in a trip Saturday morning, August 5th. My desire would be for something close to town with great views and moderate difficulty. I was thinking maybe Red Cone. Suggestions?

What about Jenny Creek?

Re: Saturday, August 5, 2006 Colorado Trip

Jenny Creek is pretty narrow and I hate to put any more pin-striping on the truck if I don't have to. I also don't recall much for distant mountain views. Give me elevation baby :)

What about Breckenridge? That's close too, no pin stripes. I know Adam is concerned about that! I'm out for this weekend anyhow.

I'll be in St Louis. :D

I'm out for this weekend, and next. :(

Actually, I'm going to be down south running Mt. Blanca trail. Then, next weekend I'll be out west running 21 Road.

Ha! Adam, I saw your write up on this. You are just the ultra-community guy!

Trail: The trail was a nice easy to moderate trail and very scenic. It starts out as mainly dirt with occasional roots winding its way through thick timber. As you gain altitude the trees thin out and the trail becomes more rocky. I never went all the way up to the lake. I had meant to go to Wurtz Ditch and, after a mile and a half or so, realized my mistake and went back.
--Thanks to Bill Andrews for the review!

Trail to mountain hut and Slide Lake is 3-4 miles total. Trail is all level 4-5 when open. Several rock gardens across the trail where stock vehicles will need to navigate a good line in order to not bottom out. A few deep mud pits that should be taken slowly as obstacles are hidden. Creek crossings in several places. Many high meadows and beautiful views of the continental divide. Suggest stopping at mountain hut to sit on the deck surrounded by 14ers and take in the sights.
-Thanks to Adam Smith for the review and additional directions.

Adam, What is the time to get there, run the trail and get back? Assuming we meet at the McDonalds in Idaho Springs at 0900.

Re: Saturday, August 5, 2006 Colorado Trip

The trail is pretty short if memory serves. I would want to spend time at the hut and the lake, tho.

Agreed.

I am planning on bringing a picnic. But I need to know overall when we will be back since I have other plans.
