Rear Axle / Transfer case is leaking
 

As you can see in this picture the rear axle / tranfer case is leaking. So they are going to fix that Tuesday. I am not sure how long this has been going on but tell me how serious this is. Should I demand a new transfer case? :confused: :mad:

Based on the picture, asking for a new transfer case won't fix your problem of a leaking rear differential. Asking for a new rear axle assembly would, but the transfer case is at the OTHER END of the driveshaft.:D

ok...anyway, a small amount of fluid can look like a lot when spread out like that. I'd ask the service manager to see how much actually leaked out - if it wasn't much you are fine. But if it's mostly gone and was on the verge of failure due to low oil, might be worth fighting over, or at least asking for an extended (100k) mile warranty on that part.

Have them check the fluid in front of you before pulling the cover off, that will give you an indication of how much is lost. Something does not look right. If that was the front axle I would say there was a porosity problem and the fluid was leaking through the case.
Is that fluid under your resonator too? Is there a puddle where you park?

Not sure where the resonator is. There really isn't ever a puddle - the oil seems to thick to drip and just kinda oozes out. So I don't think much has dripped out.

Resonator is that muffler looking thing under the body that has the stripe of something on the bottom.
That is 75 weight gear oil inside that case. Could be a simple diff cover seal bad.

f5fstop - From the other posts about the muffler I figured out what a resonator is. Thanks. The fluid is completely different at the resonator and is just like dirty water (it does cause a puddle there) especially when the engine is cold.

My ex-wife used to say the same thing....:D

Hot muffler or resonator cooling down causes water to form inside, the weep hole allows it to weep out versus rusting out.

So I talked to the Service Advisor and they said, it just was not tight (some bolt) and therefore the leak. They did mention that for 15,000 miles the synthetic 75 oil did look real dirty. They suggested a maintenance at the cost of $152.00. So whatcha think?

I guess I would have them explain "dirty." That fluid, like engine oil, tends to look dirty after a few thousand miles, but it is still good. Then are they talking about the fluid inside looking dirty, or outside?
If you want to get it changed, have them pay half for your aggravation of having to bring it in just to get some bolts tightened, that should have been tightened by AAM when they shipped the rear axle to the plant.
