transfer case from yukon

has anyone tried to swap a transfer case out of a yukon to get rid of the full time four wheel drive I am curious to know if it would work and what the front diff would need to unlock the front axle I know a few people with yukons getting 15 mpg better than the 9mpg I am getting

Re: transfer case from yukon

Alternate t-cases have been put in H2s, i know stallion customs does it when they do the diesel conversion. But, in a million years, you'll never save enough money on gas to pay for the new T-case and the exchange.

Full time 4wd does impair mileage, but 9mpg is very low, and almost definitely the product of heavy stop n go traffic or a lead foot. I realize that the H2s mileage suffers from weight and aerodynamics, and a huge engine, but the mileage of an H2 relative to a Yukon with the same driver is 1-2mpg difference tops (i base this on personal experience. i get about 14.5 in normal day to day driving with an H2 and got 15.1 in a few weeks with an Escalade loaner vehicle, very similar to a yukon. it was a 2wd escalade).

-accelerate slower. The H2 is a slow truck, and that is sort of compounded by the throttle (which is a drive-by-wire system). A yukon or Escalade is much more easily driven faster if fast driving suits your taste. My mileage above is probably tainted a bit by the quicker escalade being driven a bit quicker, so maybe 1-2 mpg better than the hummer if i'd have driven it as slow.
-coast to stops
-go 70 instead of 75 (probably worth about 1mpg per 5mph on the highway)

Or buy a yukon? They're nice vehicles and have more cupholders than the H2, which is a nice perk. That might be my only real complaint about the Hummer - lack of cupholders. How can one be expected to get by with 2? Yukons just lack all the stuff tha tmakes a hummer so fun - the redesigned frame and TCS and lockers and personalized transfer case and the rest of the stuff that let a hummer get silly out in the slop... But if you don't offroad, a yukon is really nice.

Remove front shaft.

lets see 4mpg more per gallon 32 gal.= 128 more miles/14mpg ,roughly 9gal times $3.00 a gal.is $27per tank saved times 52 ,tank a week is $ 1404.00 enough to make it worth while if my math is correct

Sounds like a big PITA!

You drive a HUMMER! Deal with bad mpg.

If it's not good enough, go over the Prius boards. I bet they have some fuel saving ideas for you.;)

All I was lookin for is some info not a rash of crap about how to blow a wad of cash everytime I fill up at the station so I take you don't have any usefull information

Gee, could the 1200 lbs difference in weight along with less aerodymaics have an effect on the fuel mileage?
Even with a part time four wheel drive system, the front axle is turning the diff, causing friction, losing fuel mileage. I really don't believe you will save that much for the switch due to the above mentioned factors.

I would guess the only sure way to improve mileage would be to make it rear-wheel drive only. (Why would anyone want a rear wheel drive only Hummer????)

I guess you didn't see the very nice "wink" at the end of Tim's post. That means he was joking.

Fstop, I agree with you anyway. I don't know how he can expect to see a 5mpg increase with just the front end. Also, his driving must not be a carefull as he thinks as I get nearly the same as him with the lift and tires.

Whatever. He's gone.

Re: transfer case from yukon

I guess you missed the ";) " on the other post. So here's more ideas on how to save yourself from blowin your wad at the pump:

1) supercharge your rig. Costly on the engine, but saves quite a bit at the pump. I know a couple of people that aren't having to use the high octane for their SC'd rigs.

2) Don't use the truck as your daily driver. Think more like 4cyl ponitiac or Prius as your alternate.

3) Sell your truck because it cost toooooooo much at the pump.

4a) Find yourself a sugar momma to pay for your gas.
4b) or you could pimp out your other half on the weekend for extra cash.

5) Start a charity fund to line your pockets with gold. Call it the
" HELP ME, I'm TOO CHEAP TO SPEND MONEY ON GAS, EVEN THOUGH I OWN A 60K truck fund."

6) Scare the neighbor kids and make them pull your truck around with rope from your towhooks.

7) Buy exhaust/ air intake/ power programmer and don't let your rpm's go over 3,000 rpm.... ever!

8) put more air in your tires. Creates less rollng resistance. Check your door pocket and sidewalls of your tires for guidance on how high your preassure can be set.

9) Duramax/ Allison swap allows for selectable transfer case. But we already know it cost waaaaaaaaay to much....esp. if your already concerned about blowin your wad of cash at the pump.

10) stop driving around with your brakes/ parking brake on all the time.

On a less ;) Sarcastic/ joking around note, (see prvious post with;) in it) if you are running around on stock tires that are inflated to the correct specs, and are only getting 9mpg, there is something wrong with your truck.

Out of 4 H2's that I have owned, I have never turned 9mpg , and that is at altitudes in Denver to Vail. I have run heavier than stock rims, 37" tires, a bunch of gear, winch, and full roofrack with gear, and still never 9mpg. Altitude, having your foot in it all the time going up into the mountains and wheelin in 4lo...never 9mpg.

I get an avg. of 13.5 mpg with my foot into the gas pretty hard, speeds avg on the highway around 80ish. And pleanty of stop/go traffic.

What year H2 are we talking about?
At altitude or sea level?
stock tires or larger?
lifted truck or stock height?
Extra weight in rig? Roof rack?
towing a trailer all the time?

Be more specific about your rig. I think you'll get more feedback on possibles issues causing your bad mpg.

IMO, I think there are other things causing your mpg to be so poor.

BTW- I would go with #4a or #7. I did #7 and got another 2mpg while running 37's on my SUT that was sold. It was also more fun to drive with the more crisp throttle response and better shifting points than the stock programming.

Hey lookup,

What Tim said is what i was getting at also, i wasn't trying to be lippy, etc.

9 is unrealistically low for H2 mileage. Without lifts/mods/mud tires, i can't imagine how i'd even get 9 without driving at top speed up hill all day. I think the fuel cutoff is at 92mph, and i don't think mileage would be as low as 9 at 92. So a tuneup and general check-up might be in order. Sometimes something little can be a real mileage-killer. And beyond that just lighter acceleration and more coasting to stops can go a long ways it seems.

And based on personal experience with similar trucks (pickups, other SUVs), none of them (unless far smaller, a yukon is only a little smaller) will get 50% better mileage than an H2. Just marginally better (or marginally worse - an H2 is hardly the worst mileage thing on the road) mileage. The H2s mileage is fairly well similar to any non-diesel 3/4 ton pickup or large SUV with a big engine.

good luck

Re: transfer case from yukon

All the mileage tips i can think of are to just not drive it like a rental, and avoid protrusions that worsen aerodynamics. Roof rails/bars/racks and big elaborate steps almost certainly have a measurable negative impact on mileage. Beyond that just keep the truck maintained & running well (alignments and all).

Good luck with the project if you opt to go with it.

And i do think that a 3-way t-case with 2wd, 4-hi, and 4-lo would be a really cool thing for a next-generation H2. They could improve the crawl ratio while they're at it...

STFU............................................

how's that for info. Why not put a tahoe body on the H2 frame? Aero is more a problem for mileage than pushing more gears.

putting good spark plugs in your vehicle can increase gas mileage 3-5 mpg
