Stuck In The Mud & The Recovery
 

These are pictures from our last trip to The Ranch. After having driven around at a similar distance from the water at a different spot and finding the surface to be suitable for the weight of the H2 I drove out to look at a mysterious deceased bird(:giggling:). As I turned to head back to drier ground I could feel myself starting to lose traction & momentum. I let off the gas, got out to survey the situation and decided I was only going to make it worse by trying to spin out of it. Trust me on this - I have LOTS of experience with this area(Antelope Sink)- at times it's a tank trap. After my buddy's H1(with 39" Iroks) failed to jerk snatch it out with a strap jerk we hook up the synthetic line to the H1 and started winching. I wasn't horribly stuck at first, but that changed soon enough. At first, all the winching did was drag the H1 towards my rig. Then, with the winch line pulled tight, the H1 spun its tires to dig in a little bit to anchor itself. The 12K Warn winch started to do its job. All I can say is that winch rocks. Because of where my H2 was positioned and the direction it was pointing, winching had to be done from a 70-80 degree angle at first. Since the H2 was basically being winched sideway, it started building up big berm of mud which increased the resistance. Lot's of shoveling & winching later the H2 was again free. After that we did cookies.:D

I don't think there's a tire out there that would have been able to done much in this stuff.

I would have gotten stuck even with my Iroks. That was some deceptive & nasty stuff.

As for the bird - it was weird how it just suddenly popped.:giggling:

Try this next time...

-go heavy on the gas to keep tires clean, when you feel like things are going south

-Once stuck, do not apply any throttle and let the winch pull you up on top of the mud. Otherwise you will just keep digging trenches and dragging on the undercarriage.

I mud alone in the middle of BFE alot and these have saved me lots of times.

Uhhh.... It's not like this was my first time playing at The Sink. I've got lots of history there. If I would have gunned it in that location with my tires at that angle I would have immediately been up to my doors and not just on my frame. The problem with that mud is that with any kind of motion you get liquefaction which just exacerbates the problem. Speaking from experience, I did the right thing for the situation.

Arrow A points to the recent waterline. The entire prairie had been underwater since probably early March.
Arrow B points to a nearly perfect tank trap quagmire. If I'd punched it I would have ended up there for sure. The only way out of that would have been with an 8-wheeled floater. Been there & done that.(Me=:OWNED:)
Arrow C points to No Man's Land. Cows don't even go out there. They might be simple animals, but they're not completely stupid.

Last time I really got stuck I had to get pulled out by one of these(but without the blade). Now we play "Go!! You pussy!!" to see who will go out furthest. This usually involves copious amounts of some type grog.:beerchug:

cools pics and stories. pseudoplasticity. i think i know the kidn of muck you mean, and you're just plain fcked deep, and long, once you're stuck, or once you break through the surface which is often more dry or has some vegetation to give it faint solidity. (if what you're showing is what i'm thinking of)

this is why i believe wheeling not involving rocks should never be done more than 400 yards from something that says "Caterpillar" or "John Deere" on the side.

that's what i'm talking about! see, i don't know how a jeep is going to pull a hummer out of the mud. a pickup sure can;t. but one of those can. :D :D
