F5, 2007 H3 questions

The dealer gave me a 2007 H3 as said beat the F out of it and tell them what I think. I noticed some differences. Can you tell me why these changed: 1) The 2007 air box lid has a panel that looks like it was added to the 2006 air box lid. It looks to me like this improved air flow to the top of the air filter and provided some thermal impedance to minimize heating the air reaching the top of the filter. Do you know how much HP this was worth? I'm guessing ~2 HP??? Was there another reason for this? 2) The nozzle that goes from the air box to the fenderwell is bigger in diameter at the end. The 2006 is about 1.7" ID and the new one is about 3" ID. I can see the gain in high RPM breathing. Do you know how much HP this was actually worth? I'm guessing ~5 HP??? 3) There is a new MAF sensor design that seems to have a reduced frontal area to the air flow. Is this a new part that will fit the 2006s? Is there a problem with the 2006 MAFs? 4) The spark plug coil packs do not have the heatsink anymore. Is this a better design or cheaper design? Is this a replacement for the 06 coil packs? 5) There is a port that leads into the exhaust manifold. Connected to this port is an electrical valve with a rubber hose that goes to a canister/filter?? mounted to the frame below the power steering res. There is a hose from this res. to the air box base. Is this an air pump system to help light the cat off? Does the 2007 exhaust manifold still have a precat built in? 6) I forgot to check - does the 2007 main cat still have crushed inlet and outlet pipes? 7) Are the 2007 motor mounts the same? The engine wiggled more during starting and it "squeeled/squeaked" more during accelerations? 8) Did the shock dampening rate change for the non-adv. H3? It seems like the spring rate stayed the same. Are the sway bars the same - it drifted in the bends a little different. 9) The rear door shock cylinder rate has changed for 2007 - The door is much easier to shut now. NOTE - 1 & 2 are good mods for someone wanting to keep the stock setup and get a little more power. I'd remove all the ridges in the air box base and use a tapered filter too - there are better air filter sizes for the stock air box. |

F5 does go on vacations.
The air box was redesigned for the new engine; why, I have no idea. Never really care as long as everything works ok. It could have been redesigned for easier breathing or a noise problem. Those big resonator boxes on air inlets are to reduce pulsing noises caused by the pulsed airflow through the air box. There were some complaints on the rear door closing resistance, so I will have to assume they are using a different rate on the rear door strut. The 07 has an air pump. If parts used on different years can be used on other years, it is noted in the parts catalog. But to be honest, I do not have time to answer all these questions. |

#6 Yes the pipe is still crushed before and after the cat. This cant be good. Other than heat transfer what do you think the reason is for the crush?

Increase required backpressure. For 06 it was designed that way, I guess for 07 it is still required.

Mod your 06 air box by using a rotary tool to cut out the baffles around the existing inlet to wheel house. If your a risk taker cut a 3" hole in front of your air housing and run a 3" hose down to your starboard bumper inlet and make a cold air ram. You will be ahead of the 07 design...:grouphug:

I've had this for several months and I've seen no water in the air box area while driving in heavy rain. It seems the heavier particles (water & dirt) go straight through the rad and the just the air goes to the air box. A modified stock setup (bigger diameter nozzle, no baffles, and no resonator) is probably better for extreme off roading than my setup. |

Not referring to heavy rain, referring to the 24 inch water crossing or deeper. If not going to off-road in rivers, then who cares. Off-road in rivers, and insurance will usually cover a hydrolocked engine.:jump: (I think:D )

Supercharges the catalyst...:D
It is only turned on during startup to add pressurized air to the exhaust manifold to help the catalyst reach operating temps faster, lowering emissions faster than if an air pump is not used. It is an electric pump so the engine does not have to turn a pulley. |

When fording rivers and traversing Cat 3 whirlwind high tides I disconnect and plug my connection. Your stock risk of water intrusion is vitually the same either way if you analyse the stock design.
My system has a filter and a trap. Its simple and it performs well. |
