How was the quality? Did it seam worth the $119 and time to install? How about the physical size of the monitor - could it be tucked away somewhere (on visor, etc) or was it bulky? |

Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
Bought one at pep Boys for $119, spent a couple of hours installing it. Unfortunately, the picture was unstable from interference most of the time. (When it did become viewable for a few seconds, it looked really good.)
Contacted the company that provides support (Roadmaster) and asked if I could echange it for a wired model. They said that was possible and issued an RMA number. Unistalled, packaged & mailed it to them and waited about 6 weeks for the replacement unit (backordered.) When it arrived a few days ago, was surprized to find another wireless model. Contacted the company's support and asked about the wired model I was promised as a replacement. I told them I was reluctant to spend another couple of hours re-installing the wireless unit, if the wired model was available. They responded that the wired model was discontinued because of the popularity of the wireless model. They asked me for the version # of the unit and I emailed it to them on Thursday. I am waiting to here back. My guess is the version # has something to do with the wireless frequency being used by the unit. I'm hoping they have at least improved the reception. As I said, when it worked, it looked GREAT. Will keep you posted. |
Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
You can get a SAVV Mirror with 2 inputs. I have Alpine NAV and the backup H-CAM wired to it. When you put the car in "R" the H-CAM comes on automatically. AS far as I know any NAV and or Backup Cam will work with it.

Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
Purchased a back up camera this week at Canadian tire, looks like the walmart job--150 bucks in Canada. Made a bracket to install monitor in front of overhead console and tapped into the mirror temperature wires. That part went well. Okay for back camera I used trailer wiring ground ,centre terminal in plug and 12volt off driving lights. Worked well when I temporarily used cig, outlet jack but wouldn't work using trailer plug terminal. Checked with voltmeter and found only 11.5 volts between running lights and trailer gnd. Went to a solid frame ground, one of screws holding trlr wiring connector and monitor and camera worked fine. Made bracket to hold camera below hitch. Very happy with picture and results. Regards The Rebel P. S. suspect because I have one of those gizmos that supposedly leaks a small current to prevent corrosion, it was affecting trlr wire ground

Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
Finally reinstalled the wireless unit from VR3 Roadmaster ($119 at pep boys) and was pleasantly surprized to find much improved reception over the previous unit. While there is still a bit of interference occasionally that interrupts the signal, the majority of the time the picture is great. Since the camera lens is fish-eye, it's a bit difficult to judge the distance at first. But it definately shows you a wide angle view directly behind the vehicle and lets you back up with confidence that your not running something/someone over.
For the money I would recommend this as an inexpensive option. |
Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
Not wanting to waste time, I had my dealer install a Hitchcam for $1100 on my H3. Monitor is 3.5" LCD mounted in lower left corner of windshield. Picture is usable and stable.

Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
I just installed the Unit from Walmart for 98.00. There is some interference on ocassion but overall it performs quite well. Installing the camera was breeze, just tapped into the backup light wire from the trailer hitch wiring. The monitor is another matter. I can't seem to find a good place to mount it. Also until I decide just where I want to mount it I'm just using the 12v accessory plug. If someone else mounts and wires one of these please post a pic of it and tell us where you wired it

Re: Back Up Camera with GPS
I just picked up the VR3 by Virtual Reality Video Labs at Walmart on Friday. Love the less than $100 price.
Will have to try and get it installed later this week. :beerchug: |
