Dead Battery
 

I woke up yesterday morning, went to the Hummer, jumped in went to turn the key and nothing,,,, and then the key would not come out. I of course assumed the worst.. but I managed to jump it and took it to work and that evening as I pulled in the drive way I smelled a faint burning smell. It was just getting dark and as I was dreading popping the hood to see the damage I noticed my roof lights on.... They must have been on for two days. The covers are garbage, almost melted all the way thru. I have no idea how they got turned on but where the switch is located it is hard to notice the small light on and during the day almost impossible to see. Any whey woud they not have some sort of fused protection on them to help idiots like me?

Any one know the part number for the covers?

Good news, I did manage to pick up a set of sylvania silverstar head lamps

How's the battery after the charge?

As for the lights, an inline electrical fuse would not save the covers, the fuse is designed to prevent wiring from melting, not covers.

Explain what happened to the dealership and ask for new ones. I had the same one happened and they provided me with the covers. Despite the chiding of several members, I still think the switch design and placement is flawed and should be corrected in some manner. The lights should be wired so they are electrified only during vehicle operation and a larger warning light that the lights are on (perhaps in the gauge cluster) would be a good idea as well. :popcorn:

You certainly are not an idiot for this incident. I have wired aftermarket lights to two of my other vehicles and had the above specifications built into it both times. And the toggle switch lights are/were very bright, leaving no question as to whether they were off or on. A GM designer would do well to note this problem and correct it. :shhh:

If a person doesn't like off-road lamps wired directly to the battery, then it should be easy to rewire to an ignition only circuit. I prefer mine wired hot at all times, so I don't need a key to turn them on if required.

I guess I expected a battery drain "fuse" (not the right term but you get the idea) where if the battery drops below such a level the battery shuts off the lights and such.

As far as the battery, it seems fine but it is 60 degrees. An Optima is in the near future

Interior lights will shut off if no switch operation in twenty minutes. But the BCM does not control exterior lights.

If these are the amber roof marker lights, you're speaking of, I thought they were wired directly into the running lights system. Goes on with the sensor, or off, and shuts off when the car is turned off, unless the manual switch is turned to the on position.
But then you'd see that, cause all the lights would be on. Or at the very least the markers.

NO these were the off road roof lights, I still really like them
