Rail Travel

Has anyone ever done a trip via train? My family and I have decided this is the year to see Yellowstone and we were thinking the train might be a cool experience traveling across country (From PA) We were thinking about train to yellowstone, rent a car for a week or so and see the sites (suggestions for sites and hotels would be appreciated too). It seems like a long time on the train but would have to beat the hell out of driving it. Are there activities on the train that would keep teen agers busy?

Took the train from Denver to San Fran one summer. Loved it! We did spend some dough for the luxury cabin, though. I couldn't see doing it coach.

The monster-in-law takes the train from NC to CO each year and loves it.

Take a couple of prortable DVD players, download a bunch of games to all your cell phones and get a Nintendo DS and a bunch of games and the teens should be fine.

Trains are the best ... especially the double-deckers west of Chicago. Took a trip from Denver to Glenwood Springs last summer and had a great time. You've got the dining car, observation decks, snack cars, incredible scenery and you can stretch your legs and whenever you want to. Plus, nobody's stuck next to each other if they get tired of sharing an armrest.

Do like Ken said and your teenagers will be fine.

Yeah, like Ken said, my mom goes all the time- she is afraid of flying. She leaves from NC and goes up near you and over to Denver.

I don't know where Yellowstone is (very bad with geography and too lazy to look it up) but if you go past Denver into Glenwood canyon it is supposedly beautiful. I think that's what Wisha was talking about. My mom said she wishes she had stayed on just to go through there everytime she goes. I literally teared when driving through there on the highway when we first went to Moab because it was so pretty. Even before Denver the train trip was beautiful from the pictures I saw. Through the plains looked a little boring though. No offense to plain folk.

It sounds like a once in a lifetime thing and I would definitely do it.:)
