Ice/Snow/Sand/Salt Damage to Paint... HELP
 

Hey everyone... we had a big ice/snow storm here last week and the local road crews were out messing things up... There were trucks constantly everywhere pouring sand and salt mixtures on the road.

I had always heard this was bad, but I thought ONLY if you REALLY neglected your car and never washed it. I have had my H2 for about 6 months and have put several coats of that expensive ass Zymol wax on it.

Well I went to wash the truck today, and noticed something that is SCARING THE **** OUT OF ME. Even after several washings, and even trying to wax and buff it out..... there are very tiny pinpoint size orange dots ALL over the truck. They seem like rust or something... obviously it is a cause to some degree from the **** that was on the roads, but I don't really know what the cause is. They are hard little bumps and seem to come off with LOTS of scratching with my fingernail..

Any idea what the damage is?

Is it permanent?

Is it a paint defect or just the damn salt and sands fault?

Is there a good, fast, and effective remedy to fix this up?

Try some clay bar in a very small area and see if that works. I claybarred a Toyota 4Runner that had about 4 years of neglect and when I was done, the paint felt and looked like new. It is really an amazing product. Do a search and you will find all kinds of testimonials on it.

My fellow Tulsan....I know exactly what you are talking about, even though it did now show up on my black H2....years ago I had the exact same thing show up on my white Denali.....it is almost like pinpoint rust spots....anyway, CLAY BAR is the way to go...it works real well and will remove the spots...just be careful when using it and lots of solution/liquid while you swirl......

What you're describing sounds like "brake dust" but it's not the brake dust from your truck, it's the brake dust from the train your truck was hauled on and it's a very common problem especially on lighter colored vehicles.

Get a Mother's Clay Bar kit that has the spray on lubricant and clay bar and follow the directions to the letter, then follow up with a good wax. The clay bar kit is rated for 3 to 4 average size vehicles but for heavy brake dust on something as big as a H2 I'd buy 2 kits and swap the clay out when it gets contaminated.

I was skeptical about the clay bar, my engineering mind didn't believe it would work but it works very well. I've used them to remove overspray, brake dust, you name it and they are amazing and the finish is incredibly smooth afterwards.

Its rail dust as said above. It is very common on GM vehicles i know. I know someone that has there truck back at the dealer getting a buff job every six months.
