question sut vs suv
reading this forum since i got my h3 (now traded in for h2 sut), and u guys always seem to be in the know so...
sunday showing a friend my 06 sut (bought new in oct 06) and he points out the rear bumper and asks me if it was hit. i look and the clearance between the rear bumper and the tailgate/back sheet metal is about 1/2" on the rt side and none on the left. i figure maybe someone hit me although i am rarely parked anywhere "unsafe". figure ill wait till i get a chance, go underneath to look for mounts/brackets and straighten it out (i know super anal but truck is new and i am still blacking it out-1 step forward 2 back) go to work mon look at my bosses 03 suv and it has a closure piece that seals between the bumper and the back of the truck (i figure maybe it has changed since then but whatever). drive home look at 2 suvs by my house (both 06) and they have the closure piece also. at this point i figure mine was either never installed or taken off last week when it was serviced, etc. figure ill order the part today and thats that. no, see an 05 sut late last night and he has no closure piece either. actually looks like sh1t compared to the suv back you shouldn't see push pins on a 50-60k truck? the closure piece looked good. rambling towards a question or 2: does the sut not have the same closure piece as the suv (i know the lift gate changes things)? if it doesn't can i add one on each side (leaving out the middle if i have to)? thanks for the help in advance, bill btw-changed out the grill to black and installed rear tail light guards (see earlier post) and both were pretty quick and easy-thanks |
Re: question sut vs suv
Can you post pics? I have an 06 sut and the rear bumper is equally spaced apart all the way across. About an inch away from the metal.

Re: question sut vs suv
notice how the suv is sealed and my sut is not ( u can actually see the push pins holding parts on)
back to my questions: should the sut's have this trim or closure piece? if not can i add it? or parts of it (left and right corners)? thanks in advance, bill |
Re: question sut vs suv
I think my sut has it on one side?? Maybe it fell off of ours? I'll doublecheck.

Re: question sut vs suv
Damn! Mine doesnt have it either!!!

Re: question sut vs suv
I seem to recall that my dad's 06 SUT doesnt look like my 06 SUV in that area either. The pics that i looked at look just like my dads.

Re: question sut vs suv
help i cant sleep, i cant eat, i am obsessed
i have weather stripping on the brain i would be more economical for my boss to buy me a new truck or give me his weather stripping as i cant work at all, lol and to boot it is about 20 deg here in NY and i cannot go under this damn truck one more night, lol bill sorry to everyone else w/ an sut and their friends, family, coworkers who have to hear this nonsense |
Re: question sut vs suv
Mine looks the same as yours. No weather stripping like on the suv. I think that is the way it is supposed to be because we have a truck bed and the way it opens. The suv might have to be sealed like that because it opens up into the actual truck. I would maybe check out the sut's at the dealer to see if they are all the same. Hope this helps.:)

Re: question sut vs suv
i recall a post on here that someone bought a back bumper from an SUV to put on their SUT and it wouldnt fit. So all data points to they are different.

Re: question sut vs suv
The bumpers are different (the metal part) -- the SUT has an extra 'lip' on it that the SUV does not have.

Re: question sut vs suv
My H2 SUV was same way, notice it day 2 was going to straighten it then someone said dealer. Started looking most 06 H2S are the same due to weight of tire carrier I think. Anyways in a week I got used to it and now don't see it . Regards The Rebel:shhh:

Re: question sut vs suv
thanks rebel, kinda makes sense as there is/was no damage, scuffs, etc. to make me think it got hit.
as far as adding the piece, dealer told me that he wasn't sure if it would fit an SUT and ea. corner cost $48. Snowing here today but may fool around w/ it this w/e. Also dropping off my spare rims to be p/c black on Sat. thanks, bill |
Re: question sut vs suv
It isn't the wt its actually from slamming the tire carrier closed (as I did in the cold 2 w/e's ago over and over while installing taillight guards). Makes sense. Just dropped off my rims and gas cap to be p/c, onto obsessing elsewhere, lol. Thanks.

Re: question sut vs suv
Bill, the SUT bumper just doesn't fit the same way as the SUV bumper. I noticed this when I got my SUV (which I wish, in some ways, had been an SUT). Anyway, there is usually a gap on both sides, and it is sometimes bigger on one side on the SUT. And this is on all the SUT's I've ever seen. It must have to do with the tailgate. The seal really doesn't have any effect on keeping water of out the interior from what I can tell. So your best bet if you don't like it is to try to modify it in some way (maybe with weatherstripping, or some rubberized sheeting that you cut and rivet on). But I have always noticed this on the SUT and it bugged the hell out of me.

Re: question sut vs suv
Mine doesn't have it either (obviously) but man, you are being anal for sure. I never even noticed it and I have been accused of being anal with my trucks.
