Cordless Impact Wrench
 

Has anyone had luck with cordless impact wrenches? I don't have compressor at home and i'm not planning an air system on my truck that's good enough to run tools. Lately I've been doing more and more of my own maintenance and, especially for rotates, it'd be nice to have an impact wrench.

I was hoping that there's something decent in the $200-250 range
for a rechargeable model that'll do up to 240ft/lb. Am I dreaming? Is this just a bad idea?

Step 1: Go to Sears, look at the returned/slightly damaged items.
Step 2: Buy a 25gal+ 5hp+ air compressor for $200ish
Step 3: Buy a impact wrench for $30-$50.
Step 4: Be happy because you didn't buy a cordless impact wrench that doesn't work.

(I won't mention step 5, which is to buy a paint gun and paint everything that doesn't move.)

I was just thinking that a cordless would be a handy addition to my in-truck toolbox for putting on spares or other stuff.

I have the Milwakukee V28 cordless impact and other V28 tools. 28 volts. This is the best cordless impact driver I have seen. It works great.

DAmn! I don;t use mine for lugs (that's what the air comp. is for), but for everything else, it's great. It also came with a nice contractor's bag, so you just throw it in the truck when you go on off road trips or to the job site. The LED setup is nice too.

There are TONS of choices out there. First of all they do work, and quite well if you get a good one. My buddy just picked up the new IR 18 or 19 volt gun with the lithium batteries, he loves it. It get used every day and he only charges it once a week, plus the batteries come with a charge warentee for something like 2500 charges. I personally have a Snap-On 18 volt. I've had the thing a few years now, it takes abuse like a champ. To date I still have not smoked the motor and I have tried. I still have the same battery, which still works fine, and I use it probably 4-5 times a week. Though its not cheap, my votes for Snap-On, trust me on this one... I have an H1, therefore I need to use my impact all the time.:giggling:

Any good brand name will do... just make sure you get one rated for the ammount of ft/lbs you need. I have a Husky set and have had no problems.

How much are you willing to spend, and how big is your compressor? I've got a Matco 1/2 drive "titanium" gun, just not the air to drive it. Yet.

I've got a 28V Milwaukee drill. It's very nice. It's a bit heavy, but it's just so powerful, runs a long time, and the clutch on it is sweet. So I'm sort of inclined to go with the or a Makita (I like that brand too).

But I just got a recommendation on another forum to look at the Goodyear impact wrench at Pep Boys. 69+15 extra battery 200ft/lb. It sounds cheap, but a couple guys said it's good for spinning lug nuts and light work. For that kind of money, and since I'm not much of a mechanic (yet), I might just go seek out one of these before dropping 350 on a nicer model I probably won't use much. I'll report on what I find out.

18V rechargeable from Sears has worked great on the trails several times for us. Keep it simple and don't carry more crap than you need to. We were able to change two half-shafts with one battery. Buy and extra battery for a back up. Charge them both before you hit the trails.

I assumed it was a aircompressor OR a electric... Not both!!!

I just picked up the Goodyear wrench at PepBoys. It's 24V and rated at 200ft/lbs. It's charging now so I don't know how much torque it'll do, but I will later.

One thing I wanted to note is that it comes with 19/21mm and 13/16" and 3/4" sockets. The OE nuts on the H2 is 22mm. So if you're thinking of this wrench and don't have any impact sockets already, make sure to pick up ones that fit your nuts.

The Milwaukee cordless tools are the only choice. They exceed all military requirements by a substantial margin. I've got the specs from the tests someplace. I'll try to find & scan them for you.

I agree with DRTY on the Milwaukee brand.

Having farmered most of my life we had huge honkin nuts to take off tractors for wheels and other machines in winter as well as I kept one with me so if it was needed for repairs i did not have to run all over the place to find a protable electric impact.

i'll third the milwaukee brand....their stuff is bullet proof. Dont have an impact wrench, however i have a whole host of their power tools and you cannot break them....and i have tried.
