Anyone think the spare tire on the roof on a Gobi rack should have sun protection? I am a little worried the sun will deteriorate the tire.

Thanks for the info Phil. Good idea.

Or you could design and install a wind-resistant umbrella for the spare up there. That way, you'd also keep it dry. |
Or, you could cover it with a spare tire cover to keep the sun and spray off of it.
But I do what Phil does. Leave it, rotate it, toss it. ![]() |
My rotation method is a little different. My spare is new, brand new. When I go to replace tires, I will buy 3 more, use the current spare as the 4th, and put the best of the current 4 up as the spare.

They make a sun block for the tire.

I like that sun block product for tires. I think I will put it on my spare on the roof.
Thanks |

I have a cover for mine. Not so much for the sun but more because my spare is a T/A and my tires are M/T and I'm anal about that kinda stuff.
The cover I have is black canvas(or similar) and has a hole in the top that I assume was put there to install the license plate but in a gobi racj application serves to prevent the cover from filling with air. Spin the tire up to install and then spin it back down to lock the cover down. I got mine at hummersolutions.com - ($75 I think) Lemme know if you want a pic. |
My only question is how the heck you get a moster size tire up on the rack? heck i'm not week, but just seems that it would be a royal pain in the rear to get it up and down.
