pitman arm change? question on what tool your using?
 

Hello fellow hummer lovers, I feel its time to replace my pitman arm and I started to do the job but the normal pickle fork I used on old rigs didnt want to work on the hummer, I thought about using a pitman arm puller but the room isnt there to do it. My question is what are you guys using to change out the pitman arm? Or do I just need to get mean with it and hammer away? Thanks for your advise in advance...

On my chevy truck I used the fork tool and beat on it, but before beating on it, I heated it up a little with a regular soldering torch then hit it and it came apart

You can also try to heat it and then spray WD40 on it too ease penetration

I spray it with CRC penitrating oil ,let sit for 10 min and beat it with a BFH like a rented mule and they come right off .

on the older trucks I used to pull the bolts on the rail and let the gear rotate a bit so the puller fit straight. its way easier and less damaging then a pickle fork. if it all else use a cut off wheel to slice the old arm so it "pops" then it comes right off. by the way pickle folks are for ball joints and tie rod ends.

Where did you buy your pitman/idler arms from? I saw them on ebay for $60 bucks shipped...

It seems i have to replace my pitman and idler arm as well. Alonge with brake and soething to do with the ac and pwer driver seat issue. They want $4100... is there a DIY section on this forumn that would show the steps to replace pitman and idler arms.

While your replacing the Pitman and Idler it might be a good idea to add the Cognito Motorsports support brackets for the Pitman and Idler, just last week I had to replace both of them and added the support brackets, this way my Pitman and Idler will never wear out again. Cost for the install through shop was $475.00, this included an alignment also. Brackets cost me $160.00 and Idler and Pitman bought through RockAuto...all said and done about $1,000.00 (including taxes and shipping).

You will need a "Wide-Mouth Pickle Fork" and not a standard one

Also a pitman arm puller to get the arm off of the steering box. You may have to unbolt the steering box part way to get the puller on there... I eventually had to take my whole box out and had a buddy pull it with an impact tool... While you're under there you may as well replace the steerin stabilizer and tierods if you haven't already..

I just unboted the Idler Arm from the Center/Drag Link and unbotled the braket from the frame of the truck. I then put the idler arm in a vice and Tood a BFH to the Bolt on the bracket that goes through the Arm. 2-3 Hits and it popped right off.
