saw a Prius Taxi....you got to be kidding.

Yesterday, I saw a prius NYC taxi out on Long Island. Does anyone really think the car will hold up to the abuse as a taxi??? Heck, I wouldnt even give my H2 much life it it was used as a taxi. Prius taxi is just stupid. How long are those batterys going to last in non-stop 24/7 city driving?!

Crown vic is the only car that will ever hold the title of a taxi to me.

I like the vans like in Cash Cab

Does the prius really hold up as a taxi? I would figure the thing would fall apart as a taxi (As most vehicles would).

Plus, isnt it a little small for a taxi (Crown vic is 6 pass)

I'll bet being an Inbred, Whoops, I mean Hybrid that somebody is getting a hell of a tax break or government incentives to use them.

Checker.

I can't imagine those plastic cans surviving very long on as Taxis.

Besides, with my size, I wouldn't fit in one. I'd be pissed if one showed up for me.

I think it could be a great test if one was to study the lifespan of the Prius in action as a taxi vs over all maint costs etc vs the crown vic. Will be interesting to see what the #s look like after a few years study.

Mayor Plans an All-Hybrid Taxi Fleet

I guess they are trying to eliminate all but hybrid taxis.

While the plan does not specifically require that the new taxis be hybrids, it calls for all new vehicles entering the fleet beginning in October 2008 to get at least 25 miles to the gallon, rising to 30 miles to the gallon for cars entering the fleet the following year. City officials said the only vehicles that currently meet those fuel standards, as well as tougher emission standards that the mayor is proposing, are hybrids.

Re: saw a Prius Taxi....you got to be kidding.

A Prius taxi fleet has been operating in Canada since the first generation of the Prius. Here's the excerpt from the Vancouver Board of Trade has to say about the impact of converting some of the region's fleet.....

"If you want to get a very quick lesson, in the most dramatic fashion, of the power of low-emission vehicles, the next time you order a cab, phone Yellow Cab and ask for one of their Prius hybrids. You will get, during the course of your taxi ride, a quick lecture from the driver on how they have dramatically decreased their maintenance and their fuel costs, and increased the lifetime of the taxi. It's dramatic, it's right here, and when you see that little yellow Prius driving by, give it a honk and a thumbs up because it's on the wave of where we're going."

And the link in which this is contained......

http://www.wd.gc.ca/mediacentre/spee...20050120_e.asp

I've heard about this fleet before and have seen the same comments across the board. That's probably the reason for the desired conversion in NY.

For a taxi driver, it makes sense to save on fuel. A vehicle achieving over 50 MPG would definitely make sense for them.
