Back up camera
I want to install a back up cam on my rig. I have the perfect place in the rear bumper, but unsure what is the best camera to get. I will be hooking it up to a Kenwood Excelon DVD unit. Just curious as to what some of you have installed and the difficulty of the installation. Maybe a link as well. Thanks....Jamie

Re: Back up camera

Re: Back up camera
Jaimie, take a look at the unicam from hitchcam and also their bracketcam. That's the one I would get if starting from scratch. David Mendoza (owner) makes great stuff!

Thats an option I didn't think about. I actually like it better. Wonder how hard the installation is though. Thanks for the link....Jamie |

Yea, I've used them on other trucks and always been happy. I like that I can flush mount it too. I hate to see a big camera and mount on the back reminds me of a RV. and hey, $30 is a whole lot better than $400+ But I guess if your against cutting holes, the marker light cam would be cool, just wouldnt work on my sut. |

With that head unit, can you still use the steering wheel controls? Also, does it come with the TV tuner and an iPod interface? Thanks....Jamie |

With the SWI-Jack I have full control of the unit with the steering wheel buttons. It has usb so you can use USB sticks and drives too. ip300v cable for 5th gen video ipods. Theres a diferant cable for older ones. I'm sure they have a tunner module you can get for it. Here's what a put in: 1 SWI-JACK Pac Steering Wheel Interface 1 DDX7019 Kenwood 6.95" TFT Screen with DVD 1 KNA-G510 Kenwood Add on navigation system 1 KCA-iP300V Kenwood High speed iPod control 1 GM10 Metra Antenna Adapter 1 99-2003 Metra GM Dash kit 1 Axxess GMOS-04 Bose Interface I'll be adding rear cam and bluetooth this week. Paid about $1150 for all of it. Sold the factory nav for $800. So only cost me $350 to upgrade... NICE!! |
Re: Back up camera
The stock 08 camera is mounted just above the reciever hitch. It took some getting used to as far as the distances and how they appear in the screen. I havent set things on the ground to see just what the field of view is. I would think the high mount cam that replaces the center clearance light might be better in giving the driver a better field of vision.

I had mine painted to match and blend with the truck. It came with a 4" monitor to mount on the windsheild, but I have it running through an Avic Z1.
