taking a trip down to cabo have questions
im picking up a 2004 hummer h2 this week and im and im planing a trip to cabo for mid october and i wanted to take a road trip down in the hummer but wanted to know if there is anything i can do to boost up the mileage like taking off the front axles or changing the fluids to full synthetics any help will be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.
btw we are taking two cars one is suburban which is carrying a full trailer so the hummer will go empty so that should help a little. last time we just took the suburban with the trailer we averaged about 350 bucks for the full 2k miles which isnt bad and im hoping to do the same witht he h2 if possible. john |

Re: taking a trip down to cabo have questions
Biggest thing with the H2 on the highway is overall speed.... the difference between going 65 vs. 75 can mean a few miles per gallon. I would think you are gonna get as good or better mileage than the suburban that is pulling the trailer. Averaging 75mph towing my 2000 lb 2 place jet ski trailer going to Lake of the Ozarks MO from Chicago IL I got just over 12mpg which I thought was pretty good. Driving locally with mixed city/highway we seem to get the same.... high 11's-low 12's
Have not really road tripped it at all empty.... my better half did drive down to springfield and back but she isnt mileage concious when driving and she has a lead foot, she got pulled over going 83 and was let off.... she is in the Army and was in uniform on her way to a conference. She averaged 12.5 round trip. I would think that if you kept it under 75 and easy on the throttle for passing etc.... that you could get up in the 14-15 range. Going to full synthetics cant hurt either, change out everything to Royal Purple.... people generally report a pickup of 1-2 mpg and running full synthetics certainly cant hurt, better for the vehicle. Make sure your rig is in great running order as well, inflate your tires up to 37-38lbs, clean air filter and fuel filter would also be a good idea. |

Your speed is important. Just drive it right and you will get the best you can possibly get. I would say 13 would be great.

Why would you want to take off your front axles? Kind of hard to drive w/o a front axle especially in Baja where you will need 4x4. PS the highway in Baja in not a high peed road |
Re: taking a trip down to cabo have questions
or maybe i can draft behind the suburban :giggling:.
is there anyway to average 16-18 mpg at 75 mph with mods im planing on adding a couple things i could always add them before i leave. |

Yes.....downhill with a tailwind:giggling: In all reality the only way I think you could ever see 16-18 is driving 50-55 mph on very flat roads with no wind and even then it may not be possible. I would say at 75 mph you will be seeing 13ish as long as your not loaded or towing, might creep up to the 14 mark if your lucky. Wind resistance is everything with this truck, slower speeds are gonna net you the biggest difference in gas mileage. |
Re: taking a trip down to cabo have questions
we had wind of about 40 mph yesterday, driving into it I was getting 9 mpg

Re: taking a trip down to cabo have questions
The only way the H2 will get the mileage you seek is if you tow it. :violin:

As we dont care what gas mileage we get. but hey i got a secret for you......(remove the front axle and gas mileage triples...but shhhhh dont tell anyone else) |
Re: taking a trip down to cabo have questions
You knew what the milage would be before you bought it so what do you expect?
There is not much you can do to improve the mileage except slow down and goes easy on the skinny pedal and carry gerry cans. |
