is the tailgate supposed to open when the cover is locked?
i just noticed i can open my tailgate , what sense does that make?

No.

On your tailgate in the inside middle you should have a bracket installed or on the lid itself in the middle there is a bracket that turns with the key. Eitherway you need both parts that lock the tailgate. The lock does not lock the tailgate but rather prevents it from being let down.

Like stated above, the piece that attaches to the tailgate in concert with the latch on the cover keep the gate from opening, but does not "lock" the gate. Here is a photo of the piece that is attached to the gate.

thanks ,i looked in the dark and it seems the tailgate part and the tonneau part arent lining up.gonna check it out in the daylight tomm.
