COMP USA

Rumor: CompUSA going out of business in January

Posted Dec 5th 2007 6:12PM by Ryan Block

So we've heard enough banter about CompUSA being on its last legs and possibly shuttering completely after closing more than half the chain's stores earlier this year. Well, chalk this up to rumor (in fact, rumor with prejudice if you must), but we're privy to a high-level internal email competitor Best Buy recently circulated which claims to have it on authority (but not "verified") that CompUSA's holiday revenue is half what it was last year (which, as commenter Hans points out, might have to do with those store closures), store-restocking shipments are not being scheduled past February, and additional liquidators are being called in to help manage closure of the 103 remaining stores. Sure, it could be a sneaky misinformation campaign -- or it could be the truth. We gave CompUSA a ring, and their PR team has yet to respond to the claim; but for what it's worth, if we weren't already hearing this kind of thing elsewhere (or didn't believe it plausible) we wouldn't waste your time.

Mexican Billionaire puts thousands of Americans out of work

2007 Departures: CompUSA failed to upgrade

Computer geeks and anyone else who wants to find a wide selection of accessories for their computer systems will miss CompUSA when its doors close at the end of 2007. It's mind-boggling how the richest man in the world, Mexican retailer and telephone baron Carlos Slim, could turn a multi-billion investment into zero in just eight years. In 2006, CompUSA had $4 billion in sales; that's expected to drop to just $1.5 billion in 2007 with more than 100 stores closed throughout the year.
In its heyday, CompUSA offered better protection for consumers who bought its extended warranties and better service than Best Buy ever could. While the service contracts will still be legally valid, I doubt the service will be anywhere near as good as it was when you could walk into a CompUSA store and work directly with the service people. CompUSA bailed me out of a number of computer crises over the years and I for one will miss them dearly. Luckily I'm married to a computer geek now who can do my repairs for me. My business would be shut down without my computer.
The biggest mistake Slim made was underestimating the need for marketing. While Best Buy and Circuit City fought it out for customers on the airwaves, CompUSA stayed silent. There was just too much noise from competitors and not enough response from CompUSA.
We'll miss you, and hope we can find another good outlet for computer accessories and support. For all the computer geeks out there that lost jobs as tech jobs moved overseas, this could be a blessing in disguise. It may be a good time to look into starting your own computer support businesses and replace the void CompUSA will leave.

My girlfriend works for the COMPUSA corporate office.
After 7 years, she's being offered 1 week of severance pay, which starts on Feb 8th, the day they close the place for good.

Thier HQ was/is based out of Addison, TX here in Dallas and i cant speak for your neck of the woods although here in Dallas they offered way below "par" service than market here in Dallas. They also were horrible about lying on thier ads and not honoring thier prices. They had horrible rebate support. They over the years had lost 2 laptops they sent off for service for the co I work for and refused to replace them despite me buying one of thier service replacement plans.

Lastly they always had the highest prices too!

I am happy to see them go. FAWK'EM!

It wasnt Best Buy or Circuit City who killed them here - it was Fry's Electronics prices. They are just as bad about service and such but they have rock bottom prices and have killed the lil guys.
