Laptops and power outlets

Has anyone used a laptop with the dash power outlets? The Owners Manual states you should not plug in anything that draws more than 20 amps. I don't know how much my laptop draws so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

Thanks.

Just look on the power adapter of your laptop, it will tell you how many amps it draws. I use a Dell XPS M1710 and it only draws 2.5 amps on the power adapter. You should be fine.

i was sad to see that the h3 does not have an AC outlet, being an elite SUV, that would be a welcomed addition.

amps is easy to figure out. just figure out how many watts something pulls. lets say you had 20 watts being pulled. Your car is a 12 volt system, so 20w divided by 12v=1.6amps most laptops dont pull more than that. some laptop chargers are like 95 watts, and that is still only 7.9 amps

basically you are going to need an inverter to run your laptop anyways right? so just get like a 100-400w inverter and make sure is has a 15 or 20 amp fuse on it and you are good to go. fuse blows b4 doing any damage to your system. not a big deal because the power outlets are fused with a 20 amp fuse under the hood anyways. if they stop working just replace the fuse.

Ill be here all week ;)

It says 1.6A on the power supply. We had to order an adapter for the laptop to be able to plug it into the power outlet. We're hoping it arrives before we head out for Albuquerque.

1.6 sounds right! That would be on the high end. You will never hit 2amps with a laptop. Unless it has a icemaker:beerchug:
